Zoolab in 6D

To kick-start our classification unit of Science work, we were lucky enough to be visited by Zoolab today. Anna brought in different creatures for us to look at, hold and classify. We learnt that there are two main types of creature: vertebrate and invertebrate. We even held a snake (well, those who dared!).

The Big Switch Off at Green Council

Today we had a a special visitor in Green Council.
Zaki from the Environment Centre came to talk to us about The Big Switch off.

He gave an introduction to energy saving in the school/home.  We now understand that some things use more power than others. Equipment on standby can be using power. We thought about what is using energy in the school, how much energy it uses and what we could do to reduce it.

We learned about the Big Switch Off, taking place in Shirley Warren on Sunday 19th November, where they are asking people to use as little energy as possible between 6-7 p.m. that evening. The amount of energy being used will be monitored on the network

We decided that we will ask our friends to try and save energy by trying to use a slow cooker, using the washing machine or other machines in the morning and putting on the dishwasher after 8pm

Here is a picture of Green Council testing the effect of a hairdryer and a lightbulb on the energy meter. With everything on, the meter reached 1,700 watts. What a lot of energy.

The Gunpowder Plot in Year 2!

We have done lots of work today all about the Gunpowder Plot and how we celebrate Bonfire night. We have had some serious fun finding out about a man called Guy Fawkes! We know that he made an unkind plan to kill King James, but before long, he got caught by the King's guards. We have done some acting, writing and all sorts of creative making and painting. We hope you like our pictures and enjoy seeing some fireworks this weekend!

Y2 Experiment with GERMS!!!

We had a Science day this week to finish up our topic of Animals including Humans. Over the last term we have been learning all about the life cycles of different animals and we finished our topic by talking about humans and how to be fit and healthy. We asked questions that we wanted to find the answers to during our Science day, we made predictions then we did an experiment. We wanted to find out how you could get germs and the best way to get rid of germs so that we could make sure we are super healthy! After that, we wrote about what we found out.  We found out that warm, soapy water cleans away and kills the most germs! So make sure when you sneeze, cough or have been to the toilet, you use warm soapy water to kill those germs!!!

Y2's Writing Castle

We wanted to show you our new 'Writing Castle' that our lovely Mrs King made for us. We are very excited about starting our new topic Castles and Knights next week - especially going on our trip to Portchester Castle! We are hoping we can get lots of creative writing done in this area very, very soon!

Planting beans

In 1L this week we planted beans by: filling our cup with soil, pushing our bean down into the soil, watering the soil and bean, then placing it on the window sill so it can get some sun to help it grow.

We are all excited to look after the plants, by watering them regularly, and watching them grow tall!

Fingers crossed for some sunshine...

Harvest time

Shirley Warren has celebrated Harvest with the help of Matthew Gwyn from
Southampton City Mission. The following day 3 members of the Green Council visited the Basics Bank and sorted through over 20 crates of food! What hardworking little bunch! I would like to say a big thank you to all our families who donated food to support the local community.

Runners-up in Recycling!

Yesterday, we had a visit from Becky and Hazel from Southampton City Council recycling team. They came to an assembly to present our school with 5 Mini Greenhouse Growing Kits from IKEA because our school has put the right things in the right bins.

We decided that Green Council will design a "Recycle-Off" competition to decide which classes will have the kits in their classrooms. At our next Green Council meeting on Monday we will decide the rules of the competition and at the meeting after that we will announce the winners.

We are so pleased to be recognised for our recycling. Go Team Shirley Warren!

2S Bubble Party!

2S have had a great afternoon! After a half term of hard work, we had our Class Reward... A bubble party! What better way to finish the term, than with bubbles?!

We had so much fun blowing bubbles. Here are some pictures of us enjoying ourselves!

Have a well deserved rest over half term everybody - see you on the 31st!

PS... I've got Freddy!

Year 6 Ipad Concerto

Here is a chance to listen to the final performance of the Year 6 Ipad Concerto. You will hear singers, instrumentalists and Ipad players, alongside a professional violin soloist.

Nursery Sing-a-long

On Wednesday 18th October, Mrs Mead came to Nursery for a very special music session to show parents what we have been singing over the past half term.

A huge thank you to parents and carers who could make it - we hope you enjoyed it as much as us!

Y3S have been thinking about trees as symbols

In Y3S, we have been spending a couple of days looking at Trees as Symbols. We explored how trees are used as symbols and whether we thought they were good symbols. We also thought about how we feel about trees and what they migh represent for us. We then looked at the tree of knowledge and created our own. Here are just some of the things we included on our tree of knowledge.

We also looked at the Tale of the Three Trees and wrote our own stories based on one of the trees.

1L take an Autumn walk around Shirley Warren

1L went on a lovely walk of the local Shirley Warren area.
We found natural things such as trees, leaves, flowers and water.
Also we saw many buildings made by people, such as a church, our school, houses and a park.

This leaf has now been added to our Autumn collage table.

We saw ducks swimming around the pond.

We know how to safely walk on the path.

Lots of buses drove past us.

Look at these lovely Autumn coloured leaves.

We know how to safely cross a road!

These leaves had fallen from the tree and were added to our Autumn collage table.

KS1 and Reception Disco!

We have some very spooky pictures to share with you... Be warned! KS1 and Reception have had a fantastic time at their disco. What spooky costumes they all had! Even some of the grown ups dressed up! I bet you can't guess who the children are behind the masks!!!

Every Child a Talker Parent Workshop

Today we had a parent workshop for helping to develop communication and language in Early Years.  Jan Stevens is a speech and language therapist who now delivers training to parents and educators across Southampton.

Together we looked at 'top tips' for helping children develop their communication and language, how singing nursery rhymes aid children with their reading skills and how developing children's muscles in their mouth can help speech sounds and being active by doing large arm movements can develop writing skills.

Parents who attended were given a free resource pack including games and listening ears to play with their children at home.

Please feel free to come and checkout our ECaT (Every Child a Talker) display in Nursery for top tips or speak to a member of staff!

Making healthy kebabs in 1L

We planned, created, ate and evaluated our fruit kebabs.
The fruits were oranges, bananas, grapes and strawberries. Everyone's favourite fruits were the strawberries. Check out the pictures of 1L creating their fruit kebabs (parents enjoyed them too!)

Shoe share Success

This week we have been helping UNICEF and Clarks by collecting shoes to be sent to other countries.

Here is a picture of the first day of the shoe collection, with Year 5 Green Council representatives.

At the end of the collection, we counted 79 pairs of shoes!  What a brilliant effort from Team Shirley Warren.

If you are good at doubling, you could work out how many individual shoes that makes altogether!

Fantastic Footballers

After school on Wednesday I was at Testlands Hub to watch my son play football for another school and look who I saw!

The boys from Years 5 and 6 played really well.  They won their first match 3:1 and lost the second 4:0 (neither against my son's school so I could cheer them on!)  It was lovely to join parents, siblings and grandparents cheering on the sidelines and great to see children I teach showing different skills to classroom work.

Special thanks must go to Mr Ship and Mr Kelly who organise and coach the children.  Keep it up, Team Shirley Warren!

1S - Healthy Snack Week

This week in Year 1 we have had great fun planning and making our healthy snacks. To begin the week we had a discussion about what foods we could use to make a healthy snack. We decided that bananas, strawberries, pineapple, grapes and oranges would be ideal. We then had to plan and design our kebabs deciding what tools we would need, which fruits we would choose and what safety instructions we should follow.

Today was the fun part. We had the chance to make and taste our delicious treats. We also invited our families in to help with the tasting and to talk them through how we had designed our snacks. They all looked very tasty!!!
