Chinese New Year

This week in Nursery we have been learning how Chinese people celebrate their New Year.  We have been cooking yummy stir fry and noodles, making dragons using red and yellow beads, writing Chinese numbers, using chopsticks and doing a dragon dance! This year is the year of the Rooster.

Dance Mats - RG

This morning we had the best time of the dance mats! We tried really hard to follow the actions and loved working in a team to help our friend. We enjoyed the competition and were very tired afterward although the children did say it helped to wake up their brain this morning!

Congratulations to Jennifer and Gil

Well done to Jennifer Trafisz and Gil Barrion who entered into the Unusual Suspects recycling competition run by Southampton City Council.  They were both invited to the Mayor's Parlour at the Civic Centre to receive their certificate and prize.  Jennifer's photographic entry was chosen as a winner and Gil's diary of a shampoo bottle won a runner up prize. Thank you also to Mrs Williams who arranged the competition entry. Well done Team Shirley Warren!

A very important visit...

...from some important characters in the novel that we are reading, 'The Garbage King'! Today in English, we got in role and posed questions to Mamo, Dani, Tiggist and Merga in order to explore their feelings, emotions and motives behind their actions during the first few chapters of the book. We learnt the difference between open and closed questions so that we could craft questions which would get the best responses from these characters.

Here are some examples of great questioning:
"Why are you afraid of your father?"
"What will be your next move to escape?"
"How did you feel when you were bundled onto the bus?"

Visit from our Link School

We were honoured to have Ethel, who is the Headteacher at Tukela School in Zambia, visit us with her two daugters last week.  They were in the UK and came to meet the children and celebrate our fundraising of £100 for their toilets, as well as talking to our Green Council about how we could work together.

First, some members of school gave them a tour. Next the two girls experienced life in Year 4 and Year 6.  After that Ethel and her daughters led a very interesting assembly about life in Zambia.

Here are the Green Council with Ethel, her daughters and our pages of fundraising ideas.  Look out for events later on in the year.

Recycling Competition Winners!

We were very excited to have an email last week saying:

"I am writing to let you know that pupils from your school have won a prize in our creative competition ‘The Unusual Suspects’

J is the winner for the photographic category
G is the runner up  for the creative writing category

As J is a category winner, we will also present the school with a prize.  This will be a bench made from recycled plastic bottles, see below."

J and G will meet the mayor in a special ceremony, and we will take a picture of them sitting on our new bench when it is installed by the school.
