Year 5 Mannequin Challenge....

RE days in 2D

In Year 2 we have been enjoying learning about candlelight and how it is used in different religions. The religions we looked at were Christianity and Judaism, and we learnt about the celebrations advent and Hanukkah.

In advent, Christians use candles to count down the weeks to Christmas. Christmas is special because they remember Jesus's birthday. They use candles because it shows the light that Jesus brought to people (like joy, peace, faith and love). We made our own advent wreaths to show this.

During Hanukkah, Jews light candles on a menorah. This is to remember a time when a miracle happened to a group of Jews called the Maccabees. After winning a fight for their religion, they lit a candle with enough oil to last one day, but the candle stayed alight for eight days! This showed the Maccabees that God was with them. We made our own menorahs to remember this too!

Finally, we looked at the ways the Christians and Jews celebrate these special holidays. We played a game called Dreidal using a spinning top with Jewish letters on it. Some children's games were finished really quickly but some lasted ages! We had a go at making our own dreidals too and they were very tricky to cut and fold!

Have a look at some pictures from our three days!

Switch Off Fortnight in 2D

Over the last two weeks, we've taken on a challenge given to us by our awesome Green Council. They have asked us to think of ways that we could save energy for Switch Off Fortnight.

We started by making a list of things that we could switch off to save energy. We came up with lights, Christmas lights, water, computers, iPads and our whiteboard. We then had to make sure that as a class we were all trying to keep these things switched off, but also switching them off properly so we didn't damage any equipment! But how?

We decided to have three Switch Off Monitors a day. Our first one was always AC, our Green Council Rep, as he was an expert! Then we chose two more a day, Their job was to spot people switching things off properly and at a sensible time. If they spotted someone, that person got a sticker!

Here are some photos of us being awesome and switching things off properly. Well done 2D!

6D RE with Southampton City Mission

Year 6 were extremely fortunate to have a visit from Matt from Southampton City Mission yesterday! He helped us to understand the Christmas story from two points of view. We had a lot of fun dressing up, making games and creating beautiful advent candles.

Thank you very much Matt!

Merry Christmas from Year 6

Year 6 have had a great last day of term, dressing up in Christmas jumpers and creating a whole bunch of amazing decorations and crafts for families. Well done on a brilliant first term 6D; I am so proud of your attitude to learning and hard work. Merry Christmas!

Have a listen to our drumming club's awesome rhythms....

Cinderella & Rockerfella

We were all blown away by the talent of the children in Year 5 & 6. Their pantomime was the best performance we have seen at Shirley Warren. Actors, singers, backstage crew, set builders  - all the children worked together to create a truly memorable performance.

Here are some photos. All the children will get a DVD of the performance and photos in the New Year.

Hosanna Rock!

Year 3 and 4 rocked the hall with their amazing performance of 'Hosanna Rock'. Well done to all the soloists, narrators, bell ringers and singers!

Father Christmas at SWPNS

Father Christmas at Shirley Warren

Yesterday, we had a visit from Father Christmas!
He asked us if we'd been good boys and girls (of course we said yes!).

We got a Paw Patrol Present for us to play with in Nursery. Thanks FC!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Missing Reindeer

Exciting news were received by Reception children: Santa had lost his reindeer and asked the children to help find them. The adventure began! We researched information about reindeer using child friendly websites, made a carrot trail and a sledge to attract them. We also wrote posters to let the school know about the news and guess what? The reindeer spotted the posters and realised that Santa was missing them. We saved Christmas!

Receptions RE Days

Thursday and Friday have been RE days in Reception. We started by talking about birthdays and how we celebrate them and we drew pictures of this. We them watched the Christmas story and spoke about how Jesus' birthday is important to Christians. We have really enjoyed our learning about this!

Y1N Mannequin Challenge

In Y1N we like to keep up to date with the latest trends... and don't we do it well!

Learning with Dory and friends.

In Shirley Warren we have been thinking about how we learn with the help of Dory, Nemo, Squirt and Gill.  This fantastic display shows attitudes to learning we are hoping to see in Key Stage 2.

Children can earn stickers when they demonstrate they have shown one of these qualities.
Everyone enjoys collecting and displaying stickers, just look at this lunchbox from year 4.

Y3 Orchestra Concert

Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful trip to listen to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform in Portsmouth Guildhall. The Orchestra performed a variety of pieces linked to the theme of The Elements; earth, wind, fire and water. The children performed a song and percussion piece with the orchestra and many other children from other schools.

2D's class reward

2D have had so many class rewards this term that I've completely lost count... All I know is they have been fabulous and truly deserving of a great afternoon of decorating biscuits using icing sugar, food colouring and some winter sprinkles!

Have a look at us making a bit of a mess (sorry lovely cleaners) but also having a lot of fun and making some beautiful creations. We definitely have some future Great British Bake Off contestants in 2D!

Well done, 2D, for being fabulous as always. We've had a brilliant week where you have been working hard on your Christmas production and you deserved a break and some fun!

Year 2D's countdown to Christmas

In 2D this year, we aren't just doing any old normal advent calendar... We're having a go at a Physical Action advent calendar that gives us a different activity to do every day! It's a great deal of fun and we're enjoying it (when we're not complaining about having to do 20 push ups!).

Have a look at some photos of us in action from the 1st and 2nd December.

We'll be posting loads of pictures throughout the last weeks of terms to keep you updated on our activities, so make sure you check back in on our countdown to Christmas!

Set designers getting to work...

Year 5 and 6 have been working really hard on their production of Cinderella Rockerfella. Our wonderful backstage crew have been busy after school making scenery and props - look how amazing they look!

Can't wait to see you at our productions! Wednesday 14th December, 2pm and 6pm.

Historians in the making!

Year 6 have been studying World War 2 this term, and are particularly focusing on using evidence and artifacts from a range of sources. We were lucky enough to be given some wonderful newspapers from WW2 by www.historic-newspapers.co.uk - check out the pictures of us reading them! We love finding out about our past.

Y4H Publishing!

Today we are busy publishing our Tudor adventure narratives. We have been experimenting with drop cap lettering, to make our writing authentic. Here we are focusing on our presentation and book creation!
