A new energy hub on Shirley High Street, called Utilita, ran a competition where children at Shirley Warren were invited to design a poster to persuade people to save energy.

Football team victory!

Yesterday, the football team competed in the Testlands Tournament against 10 other schools. It was a very hot day; luckily umbrellas at bottoms of bags came in handy for shade!

We had an unlucky start, losing to Moorlands (who went on to win the entire tournament) and Springhill B. This put us into the B league.
However after lunch the games flipped our way as we went on to beat Bassett Green 2-0, Springhill B 3-0, Banister B 6-0 and Banister A 1-0!
There were some superb passes and interceptions - Miss Dickinson was very proud to be on the sidelines cheering them on!
The tournament ended with us winning our league. Congratulations boys - you have worked so hard this year and after that great performance yesterday, you deserved to win!

Cross-country relays

Throughout the year, teams of KS2 children have competed in cross-country races against around 25 Southampton schools. This culminated on Friday with the March Hare relays. We ran in teams, rather than individually, and scored our best results of the season!

Boys: 14th
Girls: 15th
Mixed boys and girls: 9th

Next term, Mr Kelly will be coaching at running club - we're looking for the next team of cross-country runners to represent Shirley Warren, starting with the Autumn 2018 season. Could you be one of them?

Year 6 Tag Rugby

Yesterday, a team of Year 6 children headed to Test Park to take part in city-wide tag rugby tournament. They had a great time and finished 6th out of 12 teams - a very respectable placing considering they had only played together once!

Year 3 and 4 Tag Rugby

Yesterday, some representatives of Year 3 and 4 attended the Test Park Tag Rugby Tournament. They all had a great time and Mrs Rogers and Mr Wood loved how although they didn't win, they were very gracious to the other teams and all tried their best. Well done everyone!

Rob's Remarkable Run!

Here are a few photos of Rob running through our school on the Friday before half term, as he celebrated his 50th birthday by running 50 miles around the outskirts or Southampton. We are thrilled to be able to share the results of the fundraising which raised £390.13, with the winning class, 5M raising £52.71 We would like to thank all families who donated and are pleased to say that we can now commission work on our playground markings, which will be completed as soon as possible.

Recycling Competition Winners!

We were very excited to have an email last week saying:

"I am writing to let you know that pupils from your school have won a prize in our creative competition ‘The Unusual Suspects’

J is the winner for the photographic category
G is the runner up  for the creative writing category

As J is a category winner, we will also present the school with a prize.  This will be a bench made from recycled plastic bottles, see below."

J and G will meet the mayor in a special ceremony, and we will take a picture of them sitting on our new bench when it is installed by the school.

Key Stage 2 Sports Day!

We had a lovely afternoon for the Key Stage 2 sports day. The children worked really well as a team and supported and cheered each other on. We all tried our best during the different events. The relay was amazing at the end, with Year 3 through to Year 6 working as colour teams to win the race. The parents race was great fun for us to watch and to cheer the adults on! I hope you enjoy looking through the photos from the day.

Shirley Warren Zany Zebra

Well done to Caylan in Year 4 for winning the Zany Zebra competition. His design was chosen as it represented Shirley Warren through the colours, symbols and words he chose.

Our zebra has now been delivered to the people at Marwell Zoo and will be put on display later this year as part of the Zany Zebra trail.  We will send details of this nearer the time.

Well done to all the children that took part in the project, either by entering the competition or painting the design!

Thank you also to Green Council for choosing the winning design.

Go Shirley Warren!

Year 2 Sports Day 2015

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and taking part!

Sports day with Year 4!

Year 4 had a brilliant time at Sports day on Tuesday. Everyone was so supportive of their teams and their friends, and the children were so excited and ready to try their best!

Two children wrote short recounts of the day:

"I won the 50m sprint! The 50m sprint was my favourite. To be a winner you need to run fast. If you don't win, train for your sports." - J

"I came last in most races but I had loads of fun in the 50m run and I was fast. To be a winner, you need to train harder and keep going. If you don't win, say well done and try harder next time." - R

Thank you J and R for your fantastic recounts and for showing your great sportsmanship!

Thank you to all of the parents who came and took part, and of course to all the staff who organised it.

The New Eco Bunny Mascot

We had a competition to create a new Eco mascot.  Anyone in school could enter a design for the mascot.  Then we had a Green Council meeting and decided which one should be made.  We saw a lot of designs and after lots of discussion and a thorough look we decided to go for the Eco friendly bunny.

After the winning mascot was designed, the Green Council Team went to IKEA to find some of their recycled materials to make the Eco Bunny.  IKEA usually give their leftover material to the scrap store but they kindly offered us some for our mascot!  We got some cotton and some for a green cape.

Our lovely Mrs Williams kindly made the real Eco mascot. She made 2! Now they are in school so that they can be given to which class is the most Eco that week by turning off the taps, making sure the lights are off, that the whiteboard is off if not being used and that the computer is on the home screen or off.

Teachers, remember that Eco check is now on a Tuesday lunchtime and that if you're not being Eco friendly you have been warned by the Green Council!!
