Year 6 have been studying jazz in their music lessons this half term. They have learnt about jazz performers and styles aswell as learning to play jazz pieces. The biggest skill they have developed is 'improvising', where they make the music up on the spot.
Here are some clips from their performance to parents this morning.
Year 3 had a wonderful time listening to a live Orchestra this week. We went to Central Hall for the Children's concert. We loved hearing the music and spotting the different instruments we have been learning about.
This year, pupils in Year 4 are learning to play many different instruments. They have already played the PBuzz from the brass family. This term 4c are playing the TooT which is a cross between and flute and a recorder. 4N are playing the ukulele.
The children have made a great start to their learning and are showing lots of resilience with trying the tricky things!
Yesterday and today lots of parents and friends were treated to a very special production of A Miracle In Town by KS1.
Mrs Allen and all of the KS1 teachers worked really had to help the children learn words and songs and get into their costumes. Mrs Williams was very pleased with the singing.
In Year 1 this term we have been learning about rhythm and composition through the song "Heads, shoulders, knees and toes."
We made our own silly versions like, "leg, toe-nail, finger, wrist, finger, wrist!"
We made a musical score by sticking pictures of body parts on to card.
Then we used the claves to play and "read" our own compositions to the class.
We found out how to be a good audience and listen to others.
Well done Year 1, what a great start to music this term.
Did you know this week was National Space Week? We were sent a song to sing which was written for children in Southampton. It had a fabulous chant in the middle with all of the planets named in it. The children from KS1 learnt the chant and the chorus while Mrs Williams sang the verse. We made up actions and then sang to our teachers in singing assembly. Mrs Williams was very impressed as she brought in an inflatable "Jupiter" and many children in KS1 knew which planet it was. Could you recognise any of the planets?
Today is BBC music day and we had lots of fun celebrating it in 3C. We learnt how to warm up our vocals and did lots of singing. We linked BBC music day to everything we have learnt about harvest time by singing a special harvest song together!
Year 6 have begun a project looking at the impact of music in film, specifically wildlife documentaries. This will link in to their work in English.
Today we studied the composer Hans Zimmer who writes the music for Planet Earth and Blue Planet. We listened to his piece 'Earth' which he has written for the BBC 10 Pieces project. We then responded to the music through Art, using watercolours.
You can listen to the piece here and maybe create your own artwork.
Year 4 have begun their year of instrumental learning. We have begun with a focus on brass instruments. This week we learnt the correct 'embouchure' for creating a buzz on a mouthpiece and then got to play our first piece.
We really had to focus on resilience as it wasn't easy at first, but Mrs Mead was really proud of what we achieved by the end of the lesson.
We have been seeing what has been in the KS1 Music bag over the last few weeks and today we found the last puppet in the musical scale - Elsa. Here she is joining the other puppets in the musical scale box.
We talked about why Chase is the leader of the puppets and not Anna when the alphabet starts with an A. This is because middle C is very important in music. Can you name all of the other characters? Which characters would you choose for the letters A to G?
The children have had a fabulous time working with Dan from Rocksteady this term. I was lucky enough to hear some of the bands practising and they were great!
Year 4 pupils took part in a city-wide music concert. We went to the Guildhall in Southampton and played together with lots of other schools from the city. The met the composer of the piece and followed our conductor carefully.
We had an amazing time and felt very proud of ourselves!
Fourteen lucky children from Year 6 enjoyed a wonderful day out at the Mayflower Theatre. In the morning we had a tour of all the secret areas of the theatre, including the fly floor and the orchestra pit. We then enjoyed a drama and singing workshop.
After lunch we watched the show and it was AMAZING!
