1L learn all about 'light over darkness'

The festivities have been in full swing in Class 1L.

We all really enjoyed our Christmas Jumper Day for the Save the Children charity. Thank you for your donations to save Children's lives. Miss Lacey's light up reindeer jumper was a hit with 1L!!

We have had two fun days of learning about Advent and Hanukkah and how different religions count down to Christmas.

We discovered what the five candles on the Advent Wreath represent and had a fun afternoon making our own version. We also discovered that Jews light 8 candles in the lead up to Christmas.

We all now know the importance that light brings us over darkness.

RE days in 2D

In Year 2 we have been enjoying learning about candlelight and how it is used in different religions. The religions we looked at were Christianity and Judaism, and we learnt about the celebrations advent and Hanukkah.

In advent, Christians use candles to count down the weeks to Christmas. Christmas is special because they remember Jesus's birthday. They use candles because it shows the light that Jesus brought to people (like joy, peace, faith and love). We made our own advent wreaths to show this.

During Hanukkah, Jews light candles on a menorah. This is to remember a time when a miracle happened to a group of Jews called the Maccabees. After winning a fight for their religion, they lit a candle with enough oil to last one day, but the candle stayed alight for eight days! This showed the Maccabees that God was with them. We made our own menorahs to remember this too!

Finally, we looked at the ways the Christians and Jews celebrate these special holidays. We played a game called Dreidal using a spinning top with Jewish letters on it. Some children's games were finished really quickly but some lasted ages! We had a go at making our own dreidals too and they were very tricky to cut and fold!

Have a look at some pictures from our three days!
