Pre-nursery are having a ROARSOME time!

 A monster has been trying to get into Pre-nursery, don't worry we found out that he just wanted to be friends. We could pretend to be a monster as well. The children have been listening to stories about monsters, going on a monster shape hunt and using scissors to cut the monsters hair!

Safer Internet Day in 4C

Tuesday 5th February was Safer Internet Day. 

In 4C we had a class discussion about how we need to give and receive permission for many things online, at home and at school.

We also tried an exercise where we had to draw first an apple, then a dog, then the internet. We found out that the apples looked very similar. The dogs all had 4 legs and a tail, but didn't all look as similar as the apples. These are both real objects. Then we tried to draw the internet. A lot of people had a screen and the word Google, but every one was different. Mrs Williams took a photo of our drawings of each but the iPad would not let her upload them to this blog post!

 After that, we looked at different scenarios such as being asked to play a game with a 12+ rating and we discussed what we would do. 

We read through the Shirley Warren E-Safety Charter and agreed we would follow it.

Y6 Artwork

Year 6 have been studying The Beatles in music. Today we listened to 'Lucy in the sky with Diamonds' and looked at the lyrics.

 We were inspired to create our own artwork, using ideas from John Lennon's psychedelic imagery.

Year 4 E-safety Day 2019

Year 4's E-safety Day Activities

In Year 4 we have been busy considering what constitutes E-safety. We had a fantastic discussion about the online, interactive world and began to consider how accessible our information is. 

We watched a short clip to identify the risks associated with the online world and then began to talk about our own experiences of gaming, social networking and cyberbullying. 

After discussing our experiences, we then asked ourselves how we would now react to situations and what is the best way to keep ourselves safe online. The children were very knowledgeable when it came to discussing the solutions to potential problems. The most important thing we have to remember is, 'Lock it, Block it, Show it, Tell it!'

We then began to look at a range of scenarios and considered what we would do in those situations. The children were brilliant at thinking of sensible and appropriate solutions to the problem. We very much enjoyed this activity because we couldn't believe the problems that the online world can potentially cause. 

E-safety day has enabled us to think about our use of the online world and how to keep ourselves and others safe at all times.

Playground Buddy training has begun!

Today, children from Key Stage 2 who applied to be a Playground Buddy started their training.
We have over 20 children who want to help other people, which is really fantastic.

The children started by learning how to greet each other politely and practiced with people they didn't know from other classes.  Then it was time to learn our special song:

We are going to sing it to the school in our final presentation assembly.

Finally, the playground buddies also learnt a new game called "Riverbank"
then went out to introduce it to KS2.

They were so excited about it. I'm sure it will be just as exciting for Key Stage 1 next week.

Safer Internet Day 2019 - 1S

As part of our celebration of Safer Internet Day we decided to try and draw "The Internet." It soon became clear that "The Internet" meant different things to different people. Some of us thought we could use it to watch TV. Others thought we could use it to play games with our friends. A few suggested we could use it to send photographs or emails to people. We all knew it was something that we could use to communicate with each other. We also reminded ourselves of the rules about asking adults for permission and help when going on-line.  We just couldn't work out exactly what it was, so we decided to have a go at building our own.

First of all we made our own device such as a tablet, a phone, a games console, even washing machines and light bulbs. It's amazing what you can turn a paper cup into !

We spoke into our devices but soon realised there was no reply. We were all on our own and couldn't communicate with one another. A few of us decided to join all the devices on our own table together with string ( network cables)  and then we found we could talk to all the other devices on our table.

That was fine until we thought there might be interesting conversations going on at other tables. So, to find out what was going on around the whole room we connected all the devices on all the tables together with our string so that we could all communicate together.

Before long we had built our very own internet and had discovered that the internet is basically a lot of devices joined together by cables so that they can all speak to one another.

This also makes a lot of noise !!!

Next we're off to investigate the "magic" of Wi-Fi !

Y3 Music and Storytelling

Year 3 celebrated National Storytelling week in music. We listened to music that told a story and then we created music to help tell the story of the Sun and the Wind.

Y4 Musical Storytelling

To celebrate National Storytelling Week, Year 4 told the story of Baba Yaga using rhythm and song.

The story was a bit creepy and scary but we really liked it!

Learning about hip-hop grooves Year 2

Y3 Orchestra Trip

Year 3 had a wonderful time travelling to Portsmouth to listen to a concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

We listened to the music and joined in with our song and percussion piece. For lots of the children it was their first time hearing a live orchestra and they really enjoyed it.

Pre-nursery Car wash!

This week Pre-nursery have been working together to fix cars in the garage, fill up with petrol and wash the cars in the car wash!

Year 5 Yoga

Check out Year 5's yoga brain break - it was Pokémon themed! We had to use our bodies to make strong shapes, control our breathing and help catch those pesky Pokémon. We had so much fun!

Y6 Flutes

The Year 6 Flutes have made a New Year's resolution to practice their flutes at home. This week they have been practising 'Dark Horse' and have made excellent progress.

Key Stage 2 Choir started today with a very full music room full of children!
There was lots of smiles and already we are making a great sound.

PSCO Louis comes to visit

Today we had a special visitor in Green Council, PSCO Louis De’Ath.

The children asked him some questions. Here are some of the answers - I wonder if you can guess what they asked him!

He said he started in 2016 after running a hotel. He works out of Redbridge Fire Station. He helps the community and then tries to fix things. If you have a problem or a worry you can talk to him.

He looks after vulnerable people especially if old people are lost. He also get calls about lost pets.  The last thing he did to help someone was knock on someone’s door because he was going to talk to their neighbour, and they actually did need help with their boiler which he was able to do.

He had some leaflets about road safety which was brilliant because as a Green Council, that is one thing we want to focus on next.

If you see PCSO Louis out and about in the community, don't forget to give him a smile and say hello.

Here in reception the children have shown a big interest in their bodies. We have been talking about our veins, hearts and skeletons. We have provided lots of activities to help the children support their fascination and look at what great work they are doing!

Autumn Term Music Awards

Each term the teachers from Southampton Music Services choose pupils to recieve our school music awards.

This year we are really focusing on taking instruments home to practice in-between lessons. This is vital to help make good progress.

Year 2 Gruffalo Dance & Music Project

We had a fun time creating a musical score for the Gruffalo woodland creatures then using 'verbs' to explore how these creatures moved 'over, under and around' objects.

Is it a solid? Is it a liquid?! NO! It's a non-Newtonian fluid!!!!!

Year 5 have been busy exploring solids, liquids and gases. Today we came across a substance which can be both a solid AND a liquid! These are called non-Newtonian fluids and it's all to do with the particles.

When the fluid is free to move by itself, the particles have time to move freely past each other. But when the fluid is impacted quickly, the particles don't have time to move and they get locked, meaning it behaves like a solid!

We were wowed by this and really enjoyed getting messy experimenting with it!

Miss Dickinson had a question. As solids are more protective than liquids, would a non-Newtonian liquid protect an egg when dropped from a height?!

Of course, we had to test this...

Miss Dickinson bravely scaled the climbing frame (no mean feat when you're older than 10!). After enclosing our egg in the non-Newtonian fluid in a zip-lock bag, she dropped it from the very top.

Spoiler: it was completely still in-tact!

Maybe we should all carry our eggs home from the supermarket in non-Newtonian fluid from now on...
