Year 4 are In2Music

Year 4 have come to the end of their first half term learning to play orchestral instruments. We all played together today and all the teachers were blown away by how well the children can already play their instruments. We can't wait to perform to all the parents at Christmas!

Year 3 Recorders

Year 3 have had a great time learning to play recorders this half term. They have learnt 5 notes and also learnt to read and play rhythm notation.

Green Council Visit to Basics Bank

Today, three members of Green Council were very lucky to be invited to the Basics Bank Headquarters in Millbrook.  This is where Southampton City Mission collect and sort the donated food before it goes to the local Foodbanks where people can then take it home.

Last week we celebrated Harvest in school so our donations were all there ready to be sorted!

Matt showed us how to sort them into categories like peas, soups and so on according to the Best Before date so that those with the shortest shelf life get used first.

Green Council Detectives: Eco Audit

Today, Green Council met for the second time and we wanted to look at the areas people look after the most carefully.  We included corridors with displays and, of course, the toilets. Here we are looking at the plan of the school site and making predictions about the cleanest and messiest places. Photos were taken by a Year 3 Class rep.

We found out that it costs a lot of money to fix things in the school, so we have all pledged to look after our school and encourage all of the other children to do so as well.

We have new Green Council badges which will be presented tomorrow in an assembly where we will share our work.

You can tell anyone on Green Council about good things about our school, and those we need to work on.

Year 6 Experiments

In Science, we have been learning about the heart, how it works and how to take our pulse. A few days ago, we created our own experiments to find out if exercise has an impact on our heart rates. Today we tested our theories, which included the question 'which type of exercise increase our heart rate the most?'. We found out that, overall, our results reflected our predictions!

Phonics

Last week in Reception we started learning the letter sounds in phonics. The children have done brilliantly with learning to write the letters and use the sounds in words. On Friday we had 'Phonics Friday' where we taught some of our grown ups the sounds that we learnt this week. Thanks to all who attended it was a great turn out and great to see you all joining in! 

Every Child a Talker Parent Workshop

We were very lucky to have Jan Stevens - a Speech and Language therapist at school to tell our Early Years parents what Every Child a Talker (ECaT) is all about.  Jan went throught the stages of development and how to help your child develop their speaking and communication skills. Thanks to all the parents who attended.

No Pens Wednesday in 1N

We are taking part in No Pens Wednesday today and this means that we aren't allowed to use pencils or pens ALL day! So, we took this fantastic opportunity to explore this beautiful Autumn day. In Science we learn all about seasonal changes, so we have learnt all about what the weather is like in Autumn, what it looks like outside and typical Autumn clothes, raising lots of interesting questions and becoming curious about the world around us. We went outside and explored our surroundings, on the hunt for Autumn objects, then we used them to create some beautiful art work this afternoon! We can't wait to explore Winter when it comes next! 

Green Council

Today our new Green Council met for the first time.  We learnt everyone's names and found out what a school council does and doesn't do.

Y3S exploring algorithms!

Year 3 have been exploring different algorithms for games. We get given the algorithm and have to work out what game we will be playing by reading the instructions. Here are some pictures of us using an algorithm. Next we will be working out the bugs in the algorithm and how we could debug it and make it work correctly. 

Percussion Club

Percussion club were sounding fab today! It's not too late to join if you'd like to have a go speak to the office!

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

This term we are learning about Nursery Rhymes and this week we have been singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and developing our cutting skills by cutting out lots of twinkly stars! We have also been looking at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and talking about the different sizes 'big, medium and small'. We have been encouraging children to use these words when talking about and finding other objects.

Reception's first week

Well done to all our new little ones for a brilliant first full week in Reception! We have been very busy getting to know our new friends, exploring our new enviornment, playing maths games and playing listening games ready for when we start phonics. We are all very tired now and look forward to a restful weekend ready for lots of new learning next week!

Gospel Singing Workshop

The top hall was rocking this morning with the sound of singing. we were extremely lucky to have a visit from Ray Sidney, a gospel singer all the way from Los Angeles. He worked with the choir all morning and we performed to the rest of the children. 

It sounded amazing and was a great start to our choir this year.

Community Choir

Do you enjoy a good sing? Then why not come along to Shirley Warren Community Choir. We are a small, friendly, choir, open to everyone, any age (children must be accompanied by an adult). We meet every Thursday in term time, from 3.15-4.15 in the Parent Partnership room. FREE TO ALL!

Percussion Club

We were visited by Matt Brombley from the music service today, who told us all about Percussion Club. EVerybody from Year 2 to Year 6 is invited to come along after school on Fridays for drumming fun!

Check out our videos that we created to spread the message of e-safety! Unfortunately not all that of them could be uploaded as the file was too big - we have some budding actors and directors creating feature-length films! Fast forward four years...

 ...and Year 6 have returned home from the countryside where they have been evacuated from the cities to get away from the bombing of the Blitz! I'm sure they have had a lovely time learning to live with their new families; some went to vicarages, some to farms and others to ordinary homes.

We were really lucky to meet a gentleman who was actually evacuated when he was 5 years old during the war. He told us all about his life and what it was like to grow up away from your family in the war. We also got to ride on a steam train through the countryside where some children would have been evacuated.

Thank you for being such amazing Shirley Warren ambassadors, Year 6 - wonderful behaviour and incredibly respectful. Take a look at what we got up to!
