Y4 Music

This year, pupils in Year 4 are learning to play many different instruments. They have already played the PBuzz from the brass family. This term 4c are playing the TooT which is a cross between and flute and a recorder. 4N are playing the ukulele.

The children have made a great start to their learning and are showing lots of resilience with trying the tricky things!

Y3 and 4 - Christmas Production

Pupils from Year 3 and 4 performed the show 'Children of the World'. The singing and acting was amazing and we are all very proud of them.

Y4 are 'buzzing' about Music!

Year 4 have begun their year of instrumental learning. We have begun with a focus on brass instruments. This week we learnt the correct 'embouchure' for creating a buzz on a mouthpiece and then got to play our first piece.
We really had to focus on resilience as it wasn't easy at first, but Mrs Mead was really proud of what we achieved by the end of the lesson.

4D's Amazing Attendance Trip!

We were so happy to receive the best attendance award! We were lucky enough to visit The Queen Elizabeth Country Park and carry out some exciting activities. Our day started by walking up a very steep hill and partaking in a blindfolded nature walk. That was fun! We then arrived at our destination for bug hunting in which we were sucking up bugs into bug cups. We even caught a beetle! After our bug hunting, we designed some nature art using forest materials. We are all extremely creative! After that, we enjoyed a spot of lunch in the sun shine and a run around. The afternoon consisted of den building also using forest materials. We were told they had to be completely waterproof but sadly, none of them were so we all got soaked!!!

Well done 4D for earning this reward. You all deserved it. 

Y4 at the Guildhall

Year 4 pupils took part in a city-wide music concert. We went to the Guildhall in Southampton and played together with lots of other schools from the city. The met the composer of the piece and followed our conductor carefully.

We had an amazing time and felt very proud of ourselves!

Soccer Aid in Year 4

Today we put on brightly coloured sports tops to raise money and awareness for Socer Aid with Unicef.

If you look sideways at this lovely work by three girls in 4C, you can see what they consider to be "wants," "needs" or not sure.  They also listed some of their own.

Collective Worship in Year 4

This week our theme has been Generosity. We have learned and reflected  that to be generous we have to be kind, help others and respect others. We listened to a story from the Bible called 'The Widow's Mite' which showed a poor widow ,who gave less,  was actually more generous because she didn't have much to give compared to the wealthy men. We listened to the following prayer:

 Dear God, it is so easy to want things for myself.
Please help me to think of others instead.
Amen

4D's Amazing Home Projects!

Wow! Our new topic of Rainforests has started with a bang! It has been an absolute joy to see children bringing in their very own rainforests. The amount of effort and time that has been put into designing and making these beautiful creations is amazing. It has been so lovely to see children so proud of what they have done and being able to share this with the rest of the class. By children being so involved in creating their rainforests, their understanding of what a rainforest encompasses has improved greatly. 

I have been told that there are going to be more joining our display in the not too distant future so I look forward to seeing them too! Happy creating!

Parents, I would just like to say a massive thank you for all your support in enabling your children to create such amazing rainforests and all the help you gave them. 

Religious Education in Year 4

Our key concept in Religion this term has been 'Rituals' and our theme has been prayers. We learned about the Rosary and its importance. We wrote instructions of how to say the Rosary and then made our very own Rosary beads to represent the different parts of the prayer.

Design and Technology in Year 4

In Design and Technology our focus has been textiles- we will be making a stuffed toy (frog). First, we completed some background research then had a look at a choice of materials, templates and decided what filling we want to use. We will contine to practise the running stitch and back stitch before making our frogs. We look forward to sharing our projects when we are finished.

Science Week

The 11th-15th March was Science and DT week in Shirley Warren!  The theme of the week was Journeys with each year group having their own stimulus to explore.

Year R - Looked at tunnels: thinking about what makes a good one before constructing their own.

Year 1 - Looked at bridges: thinking about what materials would be best before creating their own that would have to carry the weight of a beebot.

Year 2 - Looked at static electricity and how it could transport the paper animals they made.

Year 3 - Found out about the important role bees play in pollination and then created their own digital animations to show this.

Year 4 - Investigated forces and the effect they had on the fabulous flying machines they created.  They then used iPads to create their own explanation videos.

Year 5 - Found out all about scientists that had visited space.

Year 6 - Had two mini projects of their own; 6L investigated natural disasters whilst 6W looked at the journey of diseases before creating their own viral videos.

The children thoroughly enjoyed practically investigating these areas and learnt lots during the week! Special mention needs to go to the ambassadors from each class that stood up in a special assembly at the end of the week and shared what they had been doing; they were fantastic.

Forces and Flight in 4C

Today, Class 4C experimented with forces and flight.

We made paper planes to see which could stay in the air longest.
We learned about forces and we also sang a song about forces.
We wanted to show the school our video in assembly but it wasn't working by that time - but now here it is!

RE in Year 4

During Spring 1 our key concept was Identity. First of all, we explored what makes our identity. We then looked at how the celebration of Baisakhi helps Sikhs feel a sense of identity. We received news that the Prime Minister was going to introduce a new law to forbid people from wearing religious clothes or jewellery. We wrote persuasive letters to the Prime Minister to explain how we would feel if this law happened. We had to convince Theresa May to change her mind as we felt  we should  have the right to express our identity.

World Book Day in 4C

We had a super day today and shared many stories in class with each other. Thank you to the parents who came in to share stories too! The costumes were AMAZING!! Who will you share a story with everyday?

Fireworks in Year 4

In Year 4, we have been reading the novel The Firework Maker's Daughter.

As it was the last day of term, we had special permission to show the children some indoor fireworks - outside.  It was very sunny as you can see in the picture, but we thought Snakes Alive was the best one. There was also Disco Inferno, Sizzling Strobes, Flash Harry and Blazing Bengals.  None of them made a noise - they all made light or sparks.  There was a lot of smoke with some of them, so it was good we were outside.

Safer Internet Day in 4C

Tuesday 5th February was Safer Internet Day. 

In 4C we had a class discussion about how we need to give and receive permission for many things online, at home and at school.

We also tried an exercise where we had to draw first an apple, then a dog, then the internet. We found out that the apples looked very similar. The dogs all had 4 legs and a tail, but didn't all look as similar as the apples. These are both real objects. Then we tried to draw the internet. A lot of people had a screen and the word Google, but every one was different. Mrs Williams took a photo of our drawings of each but the iPad would not let her upload them to this blog post!

 After that, we looked at different scenarios such as being asked to play a game with a 12+ rating and we discussed what we would do. 

We read through the Shirley Warren E-Safety Charter and agreed we would follow it.

Y4 Musical Storytelling

To celebrate National Storytelling Week, Year 4 told the story of Baba Yaga using rhythm and song.

The story was a bit creepy and scary but we really liked it!

Sports Leaders

Over the year, the Shirley Warren Sports Leaders have been training to plan and deliver sports to children across the school. They have been out at lunchtimes running fun activities with Key Stage 1 and yesterday they assisted our coaches with a Year 1 lesson!

Mr Stanley and Mr Ship have been blown away by their patience, dedication and leadership skills and said that they were absolutely amazing in yesterday's lesson. Well done Sports Leaders!

If you are in Year 4 or 5 and think you might make a good Sports Leader, make sure you let Mr Ship or Miss Dickinson know as we'll be looking for new Leaders next year!

Year 4 Music Concert
