Science Week

The 11th-15th March was Science and DT week in Shirley Warren!  The theme of the week was Journeys with each year group having their own stimulus to explore.

Year R - Looked at tunnels: thinking about what makes a good one before constructing their own.

Year 1 - Looked at bridges: thinking about what materials would be best before creating their own that would have to carry the weight of a beebot.

Year 2 - Looked at static electricity and how it could transport the paper animals they made.

Year 3 - Found out about the important role bees play in pollination and then created their own digital animations to show this.

Year 4 - Investigated forces and the effect they had on the fabulous flying machines they created.  They then used iPads to create their own explanation videos.

Year 5 - Found out all about scientists that had visited space.

Year 6 - Had two mini projects of their own; 6L investigated natural disasters whilst 6W looked at the journey of diseases before creating their own viral videos.

The children thoroughly enjoyed practically investigating these areas and learnt lots during the week! Special mention needs to go to the ambassadors from each class that stood up in a special assembly at the end of the week and shared what they had been doing; they were fantastic.

Forces and Flight in 4C

Today, Class 4C experimented with forces and flight.

We made paper planes to see which could stay in the air longest.
We learned about forces and we also sang a song about forces.
We wanted to show the school our video in assembly but it wasn't working by that time - but now here it is!

Science Week in Reception

Last week was Science week!  In Reception we did lots of exploring and discovering.

We looked at what happened to water when we put it in the freezer and then once it was frozen, we thought about how to get the objects out.  We then discovered that when the ice warmed up, it turned back into water!

We also made bubbles and used different shaped objects to blow them - but the bubbles were still round!

Finally, we made a balloon rocket!  We used the materials pictured and we talked about what makes the balloon move.  Try it yourself!

Reception loved being scientists! Well done!

Scientists in Y3S!

For science week this week, we have been investigating the topic change. We got given the title for our experiment which was 'catch the rainbow'. We discussed what we thought this meant and how it would link to science. We then got instructions as to how to complete our experiment. We had to add food colouring to a bowl of milk and observe what happened. We then had to add the vital ingredient... Washing up liquid! It made some amazing patterns in the milk.

Science Week in Year 5C

This week we have been investigating the moon phases. Here is a look at how we represented them using Oreo cookies. We loved our parents and carers visiting today.

Scientists in RG

This morning we continued our work on science week looking at 'changes'. We had discussions about what plants need to grow and looked at these things. We had some lovely flowers but they were in coloured water! The children made predictions about what will happen to the flowers. We are going to keep watching them to see what happens! We will post our findings soon...

Food scientists in Year 6!

As part of British Science Week 2017, Year 6 have been wondering... which ingredients make the best bread, and why?

First, we had to decide how we would judge the bread. We decided on three features: appearance, taste and texture.

After analysing the original recipe, we chose to have one group follow it precisely as a control to compare our findings against it. The others all chose to omit one ingredient or add more of it. For example, one group left out the salt; another group used 3 times as much margarine!

We had a great time - come along to our Science Fair presentations to find out the results of our study!

Little Scientists in Reception

As part of our Science Week here at Shirley Warren we have become scientists. All week we will be looking at 'Changes'. Our first experiment was to make slime. We followed instructions, looked at the different ingredients and carefully mixed them together. As we were working we described the different ingredients and predicted what will happen next.

We wrote down our predictions and experiences. Some of us were so motivated that made up a magic  potion recipe. We are going to make this tomorrow to see if it works. 

Year 3B Science Morning

We had a noisy but very fun morning in 3B today! After watching the eclipse we all had a go at making our own instruments and thought about what was making the vibrations. We made straw flutes, sound sandwiches and even made chicken noises with a plastic cup! After our super sound activities we all learnt what part of our instruments were making the vibrations and what we could do to our instruments to change the sounds they made. 

Year 2's Science Morning

Year 2 had an exciting time learning about lots of different elements of science. We experimented with electricity, forces, friction, observations and reactions. Everyone had so much fun! Tank you to all the parents that came.

Mysterious Matter in Year 5!

For National Science week the school celebrated with a science morning. Parents were invited in to help in the classroom. In Year 5 we watched the eclipse this morning, and listened to hear the eerie silence! After that, we were able to start our experiments. We created our own mystery matter with cornflour and water...it's really easy to do, if you wanted to try it at home! We tried to answer the question...is it a solid or a liquid? If you put force upon it, it is a solid, but if left it will be a liquid (for example, if you roll it into a ball in your hands, it will become a solid ball, but if you stop rubbing it together, it goes back to being a liquid).It was really fun, and we loved trying out the experiment!! We did however create a terrible mess that wasn't so fun to clean up! Thank you to all of the people who came in to help us.

Making Gloop in Year 1

We had a fabulously frantic Friday for Science Week. Parents were invited into class and we made Gloop. Our focus this term has been 'Materials' and this is an example of a slightly unusual material. Here are some pictures are what we made.

RG Science Morning

Wow, what a brilliant and busy morning we had! We did some super learning today about the butterfly life cycle, plants, sinking and floating, the seasons and we even made gloop! We loved the activities so much we have even been doing them this afternoon in our Plan, Do, Review time. We also enjoyed watching the eclipse despite all the cloud. Thank you to all the parents that joined us it was lovely to see so many of you.

Exciting Electric Experiments with Year 4

Year 4 were super scientists this morning! We had a blast exploring circuits, conductors and insoulators!

We also watched the solar eclipse live from the BBC website!
