2A Maths Outdoor Learning

We've been learning Addition and Subtraction in Maths. We decided to get some fresh air and practise our adding and subtracting by playing a game of Snakes and Ladders on our huge, newly painted one hundred square! We had lots of fun! 😀 Thank you Mr Kelly for raising the money for the new playground markings.

Amazing animals!!

Year 1 went to Marwell Zoo and had lots of fun observing all the amazing animals.

Marwell knew we were coming as we had written a letter telling them how excited we were and which animals we wanted to see.

The weather was lovely and we had a workshop where we had the chance to touch a snake and a rat.
We were all so brave!

We will now write a recount.

Finding 'whole' and 'parts' of objects.

1L had a fun time exploring whole objects this week.

As you can see we drew on the tables!! Hehe
But it was all because we were circling the whole set of marbles. Then some marbles went missing!!!!!

So we counted how many more marbles were needed to make the marble set whole again, and wrote the number sentence.

This exploration helps us with our number bonds to 10, which we will be investigating next week :)

Dabbing angles!

Some crazy Year 6s and their equally crazy teachers have been catching on to the dabbing craze! Check out our angle measuring - which angle do you think makes the best dab?

Little Scientists in Reception

As part of our Science Week here at Shirley Warren we have become scientists. All week we will be looking at 'Changes'. Our first experiment was to make slime. We followed instructions, looked at the different ingredients and carefully mixed them together. As we were working we described the different ingredients and predicted what will happen next.

We wrote down our predictions and experiences. Some of us were so motivated that made up a magic  potion recipe. We are going to make this tomorrow to see if it works.

Reception's first week

Well done to all our new little ones for a brilliant first full week in Reception! We have been very busy getting to know our new friends, exploring our new enviornment, playing maths games and playing listening games ready for when we start phonics. We are all very tired now and look forward to a restful weekend ready for lots of new learning next week!

Loopy maths with loop cards!

In Year 2 this week we've been practicing different ways of doing division as part of our learning journey. We've practiced using groups, started learning about repeated subtraction, found ways to solve division mentally and even started a little bit of work on remainders.

To apply the skills that we have practiced or maybe even learnt this week, we played a bit of a game with a partner. This also helped us apply our skills from our previous learning journeys of addition, subtraction and multiplication.

We used our skills to see if we could complete a loop of Loop Cards using all four operations. After we finished our loop, we had a go at making our own (which some of us found very tricky!) and then swapped around our cards to see if they worked. One thing we really had to practice was our maths presentation skills because otherwise our friends wouldn't be able to read it!

Have a look at our work:

Crazy capacity in Year 2!

In year 2 this week we are looking at measurement - in particular, we're measuring how much a container can hold. This is called capacity. We are working on using standard units of litres and millilitres to measure water and have been working hard on using scales.

Have a look at what we've been doing:

Florence Nightingale's Timeline

Our topic this term is 'Nuturing Nurses.' One of the nurses we are learning about is Florence Nightingale. We found about the main events of her life and then made a timeline of these. We made the timelines to scale, using our skills that we have leanrt in our number work. As Florence trained to be a nurse for 16 years, that section of the timeline was measured to be 16cm long. It was great fun!

Tessellation Painting in Year 6

In Year 6 we were making some tessellating patterns.

A tessellating pattern in shapes made into a pattern but no gaps, like bricks.
We did this in the style of Islamic Art.  We used a range of colours and we used compasses to make circles.

After we did a few circles, we could see a flower shape where some of them were overlapping, there was also a diamond and inside the diamond there was a shape like an eye.

We used the six points of the flower to make a hexagon, and with that we divided it into lots of triangles and different shapes.

Art and Maths Day!

On Thursday, we had a very exciting day! We got told that it was Maths and Art day. We had to look at a painting by Kandinsky that had lots of different polygons and shapes within it. We talked about the painting and how interesting it was, some of us saw a sun and a moon in the picture. Miss Smith had found what she thought was a boat so we all got to look for it! Then we went to the ICT suite to make our own pictures inspired by what we had seen in Kandinsky's painting. Later we got to draw them on paper and use watercolours to paint them. We had a lovely afternoon painting and we all thought it was great fun! Well done Y3S, you are all super talented artists!

Halloween in Year 2

In Year 2, during our Plan Do Review, we used Halloween as an inspiration for different crafts. We carved pumpkins, discussing the different 2D shapes we were using. We also made 'Trick or Treat' pots, where our Science topic all about materials proved very helpful. We had some great fun and our pumpkins were used as decoration in the Halloween Disco. Well done!

Measuring in Year 2

In Year 2 this week we have been practicing our measuring. Yesterday for No Pens Day Wednesday, we measured using uniform objects (that means that the objects have to be the same size, like multilink cubes or scissors). Today, we practiced measuring in centimetres because we are learning to be accurate. We will need the accuracy for building and D&T later in the half term.

Here are some pictures of us practicing our accurate ruler skills practically.

(More photos of 2F are coming but our camera ran out of battery!)

Thank you for being superstars and trying so hard at measuring, Year 2! Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to remember how to use a ruler properly every time! Keep practicing at home if you can, and remember to use those special words longer than and shorter than.

Y2H Maths Investigation

This morning in Year 2 we had a great time completing a maths investigation. Children worked in pairs to create a large triangle using 9 smaller triangles. Each side of the triangle that touched had to make a total 10. Children showed fantastic knowledge as well as teamwork and perseverance. Well done bunnies!

Yr RG Assembly

Year RG put on a lovely assembly sharing their work all about the seaside. They sang a beautiful song and some number work they had been doing. We think some pirates might have snuck into the assembly too. Also, they were very brave public speakers! Here are some pictures of the assembly. Well done RG!

Outdoor Learning in Year 5!

Today Year 5 took to the outdoors to explore shape and measure in maths today. They had lots of fun and can't wait to be doing more learning outside the classroom! Try it yourself by looking outside of your window...what shapes can you see?

Year 2 Learning about capacity

Year 2 have been estimating, measuring and comparing capacity. We have been using water, rice and pasta and generally making a mess!!
