Year1 Maths investigating fun!

In Year 1 we have been learning about grouping, adding and multiplication of numbers.

Today we used our knowledge of these skills to problem solve and carry out an investigation.

Our Super Reading Corner!

Today 1L enjoyed having a lovely reading time in our new, super reading corner.

It was great to watch children get excited and enthusiastic about reading books.

They read brilliant and shared books nicely.

Keep it up 1L and I am really glad you like the new corner :)

Year 1 have a Big Sing!

Year 1 have been involved in a 'Big Sing workshop'.

All the children joined in with singing and creating actions for songs about: washing hands, brushing their teeth and riding a bike.

Lucy the workshop leader was super impressed with Year 1's coordination and beautiful singing voices :)

The Garbage King

In Class 6C, we have started our new class novel, The Garbage King.  

We are investigating the different characters and how they feel.

Here is a group exploring the Zone of Relevance for Dani's character.  

The most important characteristics are in the middle and the least important ones are round the side. We had a lot of interesting discussion deciding what we thought he was like and justifying our decisions from the text.

Every Child a Talker Parent Workshop

Today we had a parent workshop for helping to develop communication and language in Early Years.  Jan Stevens is a speech and language therapist who now delivers training to parents and educators across Southampton. 

Together we looked at 'top tips' for helping children develop their communication and language, how singing nursery rhymes aid children with their reading skills and how developing children's muscles in their mouth can help speech sounds and being active by doing large arm movements can develop writing skills.  

Parents who attended were given a free resource pack including games and listening ears to play with their children at home.

Fruit Kebabs at Nurture Group

In our school we are proud of our Nurture group which meets in the afternoons.  There are many activities and projects which this group is able to take part in, so here's a little flavour of one of our activities.

Last week the group decided to make fruit kebabs. First they had to choose which fruits they wanted.

Chopping the fruit was fun, but we needed grown ups to help with the knives, as you can see.

Assembling the kebab was tricky work. We used steady hands and had to be concentrating carefully. Can you see which fruit is on this kebab?

Teddy Bears Hospital in RS

Today we were visited by the 'teddy doctors' who helped us make our fluffy friends better. They also taught us about how to stay safe around the house, what to eat to stay healthy and different body parts. We used different medical equipment like a stethoscope and blood pressure    monitor, which don't seem so scary any more. We also tried to remember these big words, which seemed tricky at times, but we will practise them.

Teddy Bear Hospital

Yesterday we were very lucky in RG to get a visit from the Teddy Bear Hospital. Some trainee doctors come to help make our teddies feel better. They brought lots of equipment for the children to use such as a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and syringe. The children loved being doctors themselves and giving these a try. They also taught us about being healthy and safe. The children assessed a home for dangers and helped keep Mr Mischief from making unsafe choices. They put the body parts in the right place on the teddy and discussed if we should eat a range of food always or sometimes.

Scientists in RG

This morning we continued our work on science week looking at 'changes'. We had discussions about what plants need to grow and looked at these things. We had some lovely flowers but they were in coloured water! The children made predictions about what will happen to the flowers. We are going to keep watching them to see what happens! We will post our findings soon...

Little Scientists in Reception

As part of our Science Week here at Shirley Warren we have become scientists. All week we will be looking at 'Changes'. Our first experiment was to make slime. We followed instructions, looked at the different ingredients and carefully mixed them together. As we were working we described the different ingredients and predicted what will happen next.

We wrote down our predictions and experiences. Some of us were so motivated that made up a magic  potion recipe. We are going to make this tomorrow to see if it works. 

Every Child a Talker Parent Workshop

We were very lucky to have Jan Stevens - a Speech and Language therapist at school to tell our Early Years parents what Every Child a Talker (ECaT) is all about.  Jan went throught the stages of development and how to help your child develop their speaking and communication skills. Thanks to all the parents who attended.

Year 6 Dragon's Den

Last week, Year 6 performed a fake Dragon's Den.  All of the companies got invested because their creations were really good.  This is an example of one of the company powerpoints - the SSS.  SSS was short for Secret Silver Services.  The creator of the ring of vision is JB himself, The script creator was DM, The powerpoint creator was KAT and I am the one writing the blog!

Before the day, we prepared everything ready for the Dragons.  The ring of vision was made out of bronze and silver/cardboard and coloured pen!  We took pictures of the ring of vision for the powerpoint.

World Book Day in Reception

Reception RS celebrated World Book Day in style. Please enjoy the lovely pictures of the children enjoying a story with milk and biscuits. Some children shared their favourite books with the class. Aren't they clever? They are reading a book like a grown-up! We even looked at a puppet that our friend made based on his most treasured dinosaur book.

I was very lucky to spend the afternoon with RG and RS who had learnt the French for 'hello', 'goodbye' and 'thank you', where France is and what the French flag looks like. 

Assembly at the end of the day gave us all the chance to see the wonderful work that the whole school had done.

French Day

Year 2's French day started with a spot of 'petit dejeuner'. We then played some games to help us learn the names of common pets.

French Day in Year 1

Bonjour! We have had a fabulous time in Year 1 today. We have learnt colours, the days of the week and how to count...........all in French! We have also retold one of our favourite stories in French. It is called 'La Chenille Qui Fait Des Trous.' Can you guess what story it is?

Bastille Day en ecole

"I was in Year 3R and learnt my numbers, body part, colours and combing body part and colours. We were creating monsters and we could say that they had 3 multi-coloured hands. It was with great relief that I discovered that my French had not completely escaped me. It was great fun watching the children's faces when they found out that they were drawing monsters with two noses. A most enjoyable and educational morning."

Communication Week

Communication week was a success with nursery children enjoying a range of activities to help develop communication skills.  This included re-telling familiar stories, singing songs and nursery rhymes, such as 5 Little Ducks and making 'communication friendly spaces' outside where children feel more confident to talk.

We will share a new communication tip and activity to do at home monthly to help further develop your child's communication skills. Please see photo below or check out our parents' board.

Storytelling in Reception

RS had the exciting opportunity to listen to the story of The Enormous Turnip told by Chris Thomas. The children listened very carefully and enjoyed joining in.
