Harvest Festival at Shirley Warren

This week our whole school has been collecting food for Basics Bank, which is run by Southampton City Mission and Matt came in to lead an assembly for KS1 and one for KS2. 

We had a lot of fun with a visual story Matt told us from the Bible about the farmer planting the seed in different kinds of ground. Some of it landed on rocky ground and didn't grow.

Other seeds did a little bit better. But the best seeds in the good ground produced a good crop. 

Matt told us that when we give to others we are like the seed planted in good soil. The funniest bit was when Miss Lott dressed up as a crow and "ate" some of the seeds.

We are glad to be a generous school and hope our donations will help many families in the city who don't have enough food.

Year 2 Pen Licenses

The handwriting in Year 2 is so impressive that some children have been given their Pen Licenses before Christmas!!! Amazing! All of the children in Year 2 have been trying extremely hard to improve their letter formation by making sure their letters are the same size, they are writing in cursive and their ascending letters are nice and tall and their descending letters dig under the ground.

Remember, your teachers need to see this beautiful handwriting in every single book before they can give away a special handwriting pen... Make sure you are doing your very best and I am sure you will get your Pen License very soon!

KS1 Celebration Assembly

On Mondays every single week, all of Year 1 and Year 2 get together to celebrate the successes children have had during the previous week. It is a really special time we all enjoy. The children can get a Monday Award for a variety of things such as good behaviour for learning, trying new skills or thinking about their Rights - there are so many great things they do to impress their teachers and friends!

The teachers will be uploading a picture of the children in their class who get a Monday Award certificate, so make sure you keep an eye out to see and celebrate your little one!

Nursery Christmas Sing-a-long!

Today Mrs Mead lead our Nursery Christmas Sing-a-long.

The children, parents & grandparents had fun singing along to our festive songs such as 'Put Your Coat On' and 'Christmas Conga'.  

Well done to Nursery and a big thank you to Mrs Mead for teaching us these songs.

Celebration Cupcakes for OFSTED

Today we were treated to these cupcakes from a member of staff who had them especially commissioned to celebrate our wonderful OFSTED "Good" rating a few weeks ago.

Staff were also invited to make a donation towards the Grenfell Tower Fire fund as the pupils had a non-uniform day too. We will post our donation total once the money is counted.

Winner of the Year 2 Reading Challenge

Our Shirley Warren reading challenge was great fun for the first half term. Mrs Carrington picked out a winner in our celebration assembly before the Easter holidays.

2D's RE days

2D have had a lovely couple of days learning more about the Easter story and the feelings in the story. We read a couple of stories where the feelings change from sadness to happiness, and talked about different times that we have felt sad, then happy. It's been so interesting!

Yesterday we thought about what a church might look like at Easter and the music they might listen to, thinking about the change from sad to happy. We made a list, then looked at pictures to figure out what was actually there. We found a lot of flowers, a lot of crosses (or crucifixes), and lights and candles... but we didn't find any Easter bunnies or chocolate! We talked about how a Christian's view of Easter is different to what we know now.

Finally, we spent the afternoon making decorations that would be suitable for a church during Easter and decorated our balcony to resemble a happy church on Easter Monday when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead. We posed for some (very sunny) photos in front of our pretend church. Have a look and let us know what you think!

2D's attendance celebration!

2D had the best day today! We got to go to Beaulieu Treehouse for a special trip because we had the best attendance in the school with 97%! It was such a great time; we pretended to be moles, pretended to be badgers, did some slimy pond dipping and learnt how to build a fire! We even got to toast some yummy marshmallows on the fire! What a fantastic day it was!

2D, thank you for being so great on the trip. Your behaviour was fabulous as always and you continue to be great at showing off Shirley Warren with your enthusiasm, concentration and excitement for our lovely trips.

Also a big, massive, huge, gigantic thank you to Mrs Worley for organising the trip, as well as all of the lovely adults that came along today: Mrs Short, Mrs Croissant, Miss Holdorph, Mr Samuelson, and the fantastic family helpers that come on every single trip - you are all awesome!

Finally, I want to say a big thank you to 2D (again) for having such great attendance this year. It has meant that you have worked hard and made fantastic progress, and I am so, so proud of you all. Plus, it means I got to spend loads of time with you all which is just my favourite thing to do. As I always say... it's my favourite kind of day when everybody's here!

Bike Event at The Hub

Exciting news! The bike tickets have been collected throughout the year by children who have been at school every day in a week. The box with the tickets in had to get bigger and bigger as more tickets were collected. Last week, the assembly came when the winner was drawn. She then went to The Hub to be measured for her bike and choose the colour and the accessories that she wanted. What a lucky girl she is!

Year 2 Celebration Picnic

As a treat after working so hard over the past couple of week, Miss Derby and Mr Fairbank (along with the help of the amazing Mrs Croissant, Mr Samuelson and Mrs Kennedy) put on a picnic for all the fantastic Year 2 children. We danced, we ate, we smiled and we played. Take a look at these photos. We challenge you to not want to have joined us!

Halloween in Year 2

In Year 2, during our Plan Do Review, we used Halloween as an inspiration for different crafts. We carved pumpkins, discussing the different 2D shapes we were using. We also made 'Trick or Treat' pots, where our Science topic all about materials proved very helpful. We had some great fun and our pumpkins were used as decoration in the Halloween Disco. Well done!

Harvest Festival

On Thursday the 8th of October our school buzzed with excitement as we held our annual Harvest Festival. Matthew Gwyn from Southampton City Mission performed a very entertaining and educating assembly for us. Thank you Matthew for making us all laugh and yet think about the fact that only good seeds will allow us to harvest good things. (However, how amazing would it be to be able to grow our own money or chocolate?) We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents, helpers and supporters of the school who donated a very generous amount of food. You are truly amazing! Enterprise Fayre at Shirley Warren

On Friday, each class set up their stalls to raise money money for their chosen charity. They made goods to sell and designed a game for people to play. The Friends of Shirley Warren had their own stall too! The weather was fantastic and there was a great turn out of customers buying all of our amazing products. We are waiting to see how much money we raised, but we are all sure (and proud) that we raised lots of money for charities that range in countries and purposes linked to our Rights. Y4's #tbt to World Book Day

There is a strong love of reading present in our class and while we were glad to celebrate World Book Day, and had a lot of fun doing so, we also know that we can celebrate our love of books any day of the year! 

World Book Day in Year 5 and 6!

Yesterday (Thursday 5th March) was World Book Day. To celebrate the children were able to come to school dressed as their favourite character from a book, we then shared these to the class. Even the teachers dressed up! The children made a great effort and looked fantastic! We had a special World Book Day assembly in the morning, where Miss Lott read us a book that was special to her. In the afternoon, Year 5 and Year 6 joined together, and they got to enjoy storytelling from the teachers and TAs. After that we introduced a competition ran by World Book Day, where children can design their own book token. We had great fun, and everyone came away wanting to read a new book!

KS1 Christmas Nativity Performance

Year 1 and 2 were very proud to present their Christmas show called 'Baubles' to the parents at Shirley Warren Primary School. Featuring all of the required parts of a show, the children acted, narrated and sang 7 songs. All the staff at Shirley warren are very proud of what they achieved. Well done KS1.

Music Concert

Y5 class assembly!

Our topic this term is the Victorians. We had great fun singing, dancing and acting for the rest of the school and family too!

Children In Need Piano Recital

We had the privilege of listening to a very talented member of school, who has worked extremely hard practicing for this occasion. She wanted to raise money this year after watching the Children In Need TV show last year, and the piano was her way of doing this. We are all very proud of her - super star in the making!

Y1 using the iPads

Here are Y1 getting ready to tell the story of The Gunpowder Plot using the iPads. Lots of creative ideas happening in the class to dress up as the characters. We'll post the finished products in the coming week.
