E-Safety Day in Year 1

In Year 1 we have been reminding ourselves of our e-safety charter, discussing what each point means and the importance of e-safety .

Our motto is lock it, block it, show it, tell it.  

We learnt about 'Smartie the Penguin' and his adventures whilst on his new computer. We helped him, at each stage, to make the right choice:

- tell your adult

- block the message from a stranger

- do not open pop-ups

We also learnt a new song to remind Smartie of how to behave and keep safe on the computer.

E-Safety Day in 6D! 

We started off the day by looking over our e-safety charter and discussing what each point means and the importance of e-safety as well as our motto, lock it, block it, show it, tell it. 

After, we considered some scenarios and decided how we would offer advice to others, using the subjunctive form (something we have been focusing on in English). The children were superstars at this and really showed their understanding of how to keep safe online! :). 

We then attended a Key Stage 2 assembly to discuss being safe online and ways in which we can do this.

Year 6 E-Safety

Year 6 E-Safety Week! 

We have been busy in year 6 discussing what constitutes e-safety and how we can keep ourselves safe on the internet. We started our discussion by considering what e-safety means and how we can keep ourselves safe. Here our some of our considerations:

We then watched two videos reminding us how to keep our information, ourselves and other people safe online. These were very informative and enabled us to think about our own safety online. These are the links if you want to check them out to further your own understanding of e-safety!

Next, we looked at three different Instagram accounts. One exposed the identity of a person using their name, pictures and personal information and the other two used avatars as their pictures. However, one used their name and the other used a fake name. This sparked a discussion about how important it is to keep our information and identity private when using the internet and social media sites. We can do this by: 

Junior Road Safety Officer Training

We are excited that we now have two KS2 pupils trained as Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs). They had a fantastic afternoon learning about road safety and even designed their own t-shirts (see below!). Some top tips they want to share are: * Be bright, be seen! * Always pay attention near roads. * Stop, look and listen and look both ways when crossing roads. * Air pollution is a problem in Southampton. Did you know? A child gets more bad fumes when they are sat inside a car than when they are walking to school with their adults.

The JRSOs are keen to share more of their knowledge and have some goodies to give out so keep an eye out for them at school!

Road Safety in Reception

On Tuesday, we had a visit from 'Bike- it Jen' from Sustrans, who talked to us about the benefits of walking, cycling or scooting to school and how to keep safe.

Some of the many benefits of walking to school include:

• good exercise
• fresh air
• lots to see and talk about

Here are some 'Green Cross Code' top tips on how to stay safe when walking near the road:

• Think - find a safe space to cross (zebra crossing, pelican crossing, lollipop person etc)  - never between parked cars
• Stop - keep a safe distance from the road
• Use your eyes and ears - never cross when listening to music or using a mobile phone
• Wait until it is clear or the cars have stopped - both ways
• Look and listen
• Walk, never run
• Wear bright/reflective clothing when it's dark

If you are unable to walk to school, Jenny also talked about how to stay safe in the car. Her tips included:

• Always wear your seatbelt
• Don't play with the car doors
• Remind the driver never to use their phone while driving

4T Internet Safety Day

Yesterday was Internet Safety Day and in Year 4T we were focusing on how to show kindness when online.

First, it was quiz time to see how internet-smart we were...

                                    

 




Then we thought about the qualities that make a good friend and how someone can show those qualities when they are online.
We encouraged each other by sharing with everyone in the class different qualities that make each of us great friends. Then we thought about how we can show those qualities when we are online.

- A good friend online is someone who doesn't pass on any pictures or videos that you don't like and always asks their permission first. 

- A good friend online always says kind and encouraging things.

-A good friend online includes friends in their games, rather than leaving someone out. 

PSCO visit to Green Council

Yesterday we welcomed our new PCSO, Adey Griffiths, into the school for the first time!

He met members of the Green Council and a school governor, who wanted to talk to him about how we are trying to improve our school and how we can all work together to make things better for everyone in our community.

We talked about how important it is that children cross the road carefully at the beginning and end of school and especially when there are parked cars, or cars pulling out.

We talked about litter and how we are going to Clean For The Queen on Friday (watch this space for our next blog about that).

There was a lot to talk about!

Starting The Year Safely with Hampshire Fire and Rescue!

Today Hampshire Fire and Rescue came to years 5 and 6 to remind us all about staying safe when we are walking (pedestrians) and cycling.  These photos show some children finding out what was wrong with the bikes before fixing them.

 

One pupil in year 6 said, "Today we are learning to solve problems that are found in bikes. We found out that the brakes were too loose. The tyre wasn't pumped up properly. It needs a new tyre, maybe an inner tube."
