Christmas Jumper Day Success!

Thank you to everyone at Shirley Warren for wearing festive jumpers last Friday. From your donations we were able to raise an amazing  £203.06 for the Southampton Hospital Charity! The charity were very excited to hear we had raised money for them and wanted to pass on a special thank you to all the pupils involved.

Shoebox Reminder

Last week, Nick from the Rotary Club came in to tell KS1 and KS2 about the Shoebox scheme which we are operating for the second year running in Shirley Warren. Last year we managed to collect about 50 boxes to send to disadvantaged children overseas through the Rotary Club.

Supporting Soccer Aid in Reception

Today was a great day in Reception. We all wore special sports clothes to support Soccer Aid by UNICEF . We talked about what the charity does and looked at what our money could go towards. We also explored why it was so important that children learn and play. We talked about  how lucky we are in our class because we can read, write and play everyday! We explored our right to play and made links by looking at different pictures. We love being a Rights Respecting School. Thank you to all the grown ups who donated in our Reception classes today.

Valentines Day 💓 Shirley Warren has a huge heart!

Last week, two parents from our Shirley Warren family who had experience of Ocean Ward and PICU with their children suggested that we ask children to dress in red (or non uniform) on Valentines Day to support these two charities at Southampton General Hospital.

Today saw a lovely selection of red clothes - lots of Saints kits as well!

We are pleased to announce that the total collection amount was £351.82

NSPCC- Speak Out, Stay Safe

Today in Green Council we welcomed an outside speaker.
Sharon Kay works for the NSPCC and she came to talk to us about how we can speak out and stay safe.

One Year 6 rep kindly wrote minutes for us, which our Year 5 rep helped to write up.
He says:
* Buddy the speech bubble is their mascot
* the charity was founded 134 years ago
* Children would work at 5 because they would be able to work in mines and go under machines, mainly because they were small.  Some children got hurt and they wouldn't be able to do things they wanted if they got hurt.
* They go to every school and they choose a fundraising event
* Green Council want us all in Shirley Warren to do a danceathon
* Some schools do a conga line around the school but we decided we will try cultural dancing

Sharon is going to give us everything we need to do this and hopefully we will be able to raise a large amount of money for the NSPCC.

Harvest Festival at Shirley Warren

This week our whole school has been collecting food for Basics Bank, which is run by Southampton City Mission and Matt came in to lead an assembly for KS1 and one for KS2. 

We had a lot of fun with a visual story Matt told us from the Bible about the farmer planting the seed in different kinds of ground. Some of it landed on rocky ground and didn't grow.

Other seeds did a little bit better. But the best seeds in the good ground produced a good crop. 

Matt told us that when we give to others we are like the seed planted in good soil. The funniest bit was when Miss Lott dressed up as a crow and "ate" some of the seeds.

We are glad to be a generous school and hope our donations will help many families in the city who don't have enough food.

We support Water Aid

Earlier in the year, Tony from Water Aid came to speak to Green Council about how many people around the world don't have enough water to stay healthy. he challenged us to raise money for Water Aid.  we asked Costco to donate some cups so we could fill them with water and make some money but instead they gave us a cheque for £50 for Water Aid.

Last week, Tony came in to be presented with the cheque. He had the opportunity to share more about Water Aid with every class in Key Stage 2, so we all have more awareness of Global Issues around water.

Water Aid Speaker comes to Green Council

Today Tony Ridley come to speak to Green Council about Water Aid.

Mrs Williams made notes so that the Green Council reps can share with their classes the information he gave. This blog is a good way of sharing information.

Tony worked for HSBC and they supported the Water Aid charity and let him talk about it to local groups. He is now retired, but still does talks for Water Aid. He told us:
* 884 million (that's 884,000,000) people had no access to safe water in 2011, the figure now is only 650 million!
* Children often get diseases and may miss school as they have to get water.
*900 children under 5 die every day from very very bad tummy bugs.
* You can only go 3 days without water.
* In the UK people use on average 150 litres a day. In Africa they use 10 litres a day.
* 2.3 billion (that's 2,300,000,000) people don't have access to a toilet. That's about 30% of the world.
* Water Aid works with local people to provide sustainable solutions.  Here is a picture of some of the things they do.


We are going to raise some money for Water Aid charity and will make plans for that at our next Green Council meeting.

Children in Nursery made an outstanding effort with the Children in Need theme 'Spotacular' today!

Thank you to everybody who made, bought and found something spotty to wear.  

The school raised a total of £260.93 for Children in Need!

Celebration Cupcakes for OFSTED

Today we were treated to these cupcakes from a member of staff who had them especially commissioned to celebrate our wonderful OFSTED "Good" rating a few weeks ago.

Staff were also invited to make a donation towards the Grenfell Tower Fire fund as the pupils had a non-uniform day too. We will post our donation total once the money is counted.

Marathan fundraiser visit

Today we welcomed Baz Newman, a parent of two of our pupils, to assembly to thank him for running in Southampton's ABP marathon in April to raise funds for Chromebooks in our school.

He was interviewed by two year 6's from our school's Green Council who chose the questions they wanted to ask.

We found out that the weather was cool but then it became very hot at 12.00. Baz trained for 4 months to run the marathon and it was the first one he had done, although he has run many Parkruns (5K) and other events before.

It was exciting to hear that his next challenge is on Friday, when he will be part of a relay team running from London to Cardiff which is 160 miles.

Thank you for raising £260 for our school.

Fantastic Friday!

On Friday we dressed in red and held a cake sale in aid of Red Nose Day and our link school, Tukela in Zambia. 

Thanks to your very generous donations and delicious cakes we raised an amazing….

£424.64!!!

We linked our learning to World Water Day - keep your eyes peeled for when we announce the winner of our poster competition!

A fantastic amount raised.

Visit from our Link School

We were honoured to have Ethel, who is the Headteacher at Tukela School in Zambia, visit us with her two daugters last week.  They were in the UK and came to meet the children and celebrate our fundraising of £100 for their toilets, as well as talking to our Green Council about how we could work together.

First, some members of school gave them a tour. Next the two girls experienced life in Year 4 and Year 6.  After that Ethel and her daughters led a very interesting assembly about life in Zambia.

World Water Day Fundraising event.

This term we have been collecting money for our twin school, Tukela in Zambia.

They currently have 2 toilets shared between 130 students and 8 staff.

First of all the Green Council brought back their class bottles to count the money.

Next we lined up the bottles in order of the class that collected the most, compared to the class that collected the least.  

Can you tell which class was the winner?  

Yes, Year 5 not only filled their bottle but also had an extra bag of money.  When counted, it added up to £13.62. Year 5 have won an "Arty Party" with Mrs Williams next Tuesday afternoon.

I think this was their favourite activity out of all of the Green Council meetings this year!

When all of the money was counted by two boys in Year 6, we found that we had raised... £100.09!

World Water Day 2016

Today Shirley Warren Primary School helped to celebrate the 23rd United Nations World Water Day.

We started off with a very interesting assembly from Ashleigh from Southern Water who challenged us to think about where we could save water.

We then heard from Stella Typhoon (Mrs Bullas) and Aqua Lakes (Mrs Williams) who were hosting Shirley Warren News, about water around the world.  But they kept getting crackly screens! There were no reports!  So every year group found out about an aspect of water during the day. Here are some games from Year 3.

From Environmental Health correspondents to Weather Reports via songs and lots of practical activities, Shirley Warren News was finally aired at the end of the day.

Then we saw some photos of our link school, Tukela, in Zambia.  They need to raise money for flushing toilets.  Maybe you can just about see "boys" on the left and "girls" on the right on the corrugated doors in the picture. Can you see any water nearby?

As we have just had Sports Relief we are going to fund raise next term but we need your ideas for interesting ways we can raise money.  Please tell your Green Council rep any ideas you have.

Super Sport Relief Week at Shirley Warren!

We've had the best week at Shirley Warren fundraising for Sport Relief! Every single day we have had a sporty challenge to complete and we have tried our very best to take part. The challenges included balancing and spelling skills, yoga, dance mat competitions and on the last day we made up our own challenge using a Sport Relief balloon. So far, we have managed to raise £272! We have done ourselves proud! GO SWPNS!

Sports Relief Challenges in Y4H

This week we have had great fun completing the challenges for sports relief. We had a go at Just Dance, star jumps and yoga. Today, Miss Jones gave us a balloon and we had to come up with our own challenges. We came up with a few games: 1 - How many times can we hit the balloon before it touches the ground? 2 - How quickly can we get the balloon down the line by passing it through our legs and over our heads. Our best time was 26 seconds! Check us out in action below! _

Y4H Disco Yoga

For Sports Relief this week, we are taking part in exercise every day. Yesterday, we had to count how many star jumps we could do in a minute, this ranged from 70 - 120 in Y4H! Today, we had a go at disco yoga. We had great fun, check us out in action!

Merry Christmas from Y1N

We all dressed up in our Christmassy clothes today to support the Text Santa charities. We had lots of fun preparing for the Christmas season. We want to wish you all a very merry Christmas filled with lots of happiness and laughter! From Y1N :)
