Traditional Tales - Year 1 Class Assembly

Here are Year 1 ready to show and tell their adults all that they know about Traditional tales.

Preparations are underway!

We're really looking forward to sharing our Y5/6 Christmas production of Jack and the Beanstalk with our friends and family!
Across the classes, we've been busy making all the props, scenery and set that we need. Here's a few sneak peeks at 6D's creations. You'll have to wait until Tuesday to see the whole thing though!

Year One a Superhero Day

We are ready for our superhero day here in 1N! Everyone looks fantastic and we are inspired to create some fantastic ideas for our writing! 

Year 2's Midsummer Night's Dream

We had a visit from a lovely lady called Beth. She told us the story of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare and we did some acting to help us learn the story. What a crazy story it was! We learnt all about the friends, the fairies and the workers and how they worked together to create such a wonderful and interesting story.

Year 1 and The Great Fire of London

On Friday we had such a fun morning travelling back in a time machine to the year 1666 in a time machine. We met Samuel Pepys, Thomas Farriner and the Duke of York and they told us the story of The Great Fire of London. We found out where it started, we thought about why it started and what happened to London afterwards. We had to join in with role play, actions, sound effects, time travel and we even learned a rap! (Mostly because we are quite cool anyway...) The workshop made us want to find out more about the disaster so we spent the rest of the day on the computers and iPads watching videos, reading Samuel's diary entries and looking at pictures of what happened.

A very important visit...

...from some important characters in the novel that we are reading, 'The Garbage King'! Today in English, we got in role and posed questions to Mamo, Dani, Tiggist and Merga in order to explore their feelings, emotions and motives behind their actions during the first few chapters of the book. We learnt the difference between open and closed questions so that we could craft questions which would get the best responses from these characters.

Here are some examples of great questioning:
"Why are you afraid of your father?"
"What will be your next move to escape?"
"How did you feel when you were bundled onto the bus?"

Year One Traveled Around the UK!

In Year One we have started to learn all about aviation and the countries in the United Kingdom. We decided we wanted to write an exciting adventure story about flying around the UK on an aeroplane. So, we created our own aeroplane in our school hall and flew to the different countries where we learned lots about the characteristics of each country... including special foods! We had so much fun and really enjoyed being passengers on Year One Airways!

Y4H - Belonging: Freeze Frames

In Y4H we have been creating freeze frames to show what was happening in the four pictures we looked at earlier in the week. One-at-a-time we broke out of the freeze frame, to explain to the audience how our character felt and what was going on! Take a look at our freeze frames!

Zoo Tycoon

In Year 2, we received a secret message from a mysterious man challenging us to set up a zoo on the deserted island of Pulua Nila. Our first job was to research the island and create map so we knew the features of the island. We knew we had to know about the island so we coud discover which habitats were on the island, and then decide which animals would be able to survive there. Here we are making the maps:

Safer internet day in Year 6

Today we have been learning about how to stay safe on the Internet.

We wrote our own lyrics to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" including the chorus 

"Be careful what you post, post, post, post

Cause you don't want anyone to know, know, know, know

Year 2 go to the theatre!

In Year 2, we are learning about different Julia Donaldson books. We read the story of 'What The Ladybird Heard' and then went to The Royal Theatre in Winchester to watch the story being performed. It was brilliant!! The children (and adults) really enjoyed it and the behaviour of the children was absolutely fantastic. Everyone had a great time. A big thank you to the 'Friends of Shirley Warren' whose fundraising meant that the trip could be very well subsidised. Look at these lovely photos.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Year 2H have had a fantastic term learning all about William Shakespeare's ' A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The children have enjoyed learning about the characters and the plot. They have created story maps, written letters in role as Lysander and produced and directed freeze frames to show the key parts of the play. Today we invited parents into class to show them our fantastic work! We are very proud of all the children.

Year 3 Roman Visitor

Year 3 were lucky enough to have a special visit from a Roman Lady, Flavia. They learnt about life in the Roman times and the clothes they wore. The children also got the opportunity to look at Roman artifacts and sketch these in their topic books. Finally, they were lucky enough to try on togas and play a few Roman games. We really enjoyed ourselves!

Playing with Play scripts in Y4

This morning in literacy Y4 put their acting and attention skills to the test by doing a freeze frame read out of "The Witch Who Nicked Happiness". Each group had to be ready as they never knew when "FREEZE" would be called or whose group would read next!

Y4 Conscience Alley

During our study of The Iron Man, Y4 has been exploring the different characters in the book. Recently Hogarth, one of our main characters, made a tricky decision.  To explore how he must have felt and why, we did a conscience alley where we had to either agree or disagree with Hogarth's choice.

 

Year 4 Presents: THE IRON MAN

This term Year 4 will be studying "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes through a Power of Reading. To get the ball rolling we did our first reader's theater of the year. For this activity we broke up into groups of five or six, each group preparing the same extract from the text. What made each performance unique was how each group used their voices differently to tell the story. At times we read loudly, at times we read softly, and there were even some parts where we made our own sound effects!

Year One Plan, Do, Review

In Year One we have started looking at Traditional Tales in Literacy. So far, we have looked at The Gingerbread Man, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Jack and the Beanstalk. In Plan, Do, Review today some children have been role playing Jack and the Beanstalk. Here we have the cow, cheeky Jack and the very scary Giant! 

Nativities

'One of the best parts of being a Governor is the opportunity it brings to attend a Nativity event at Christmas. I have thoroughly enjoyed 2 this year, having watched the Nursery & Reception children singing and acting early last week, and then KS1 Christmas Performance of the “Christmas Baubles” later in the week. Both events were delightful, with something for everyone to do- some excellent singing and speaking – and very good costumes – just what was needed to bring the Christmas Story to life and start the festive Season. Well done to all those who took part & also to Mrs Bullas and Mrs Mead and the rest of the staff who must all have been working so hard to get the shows working well. It is great to see the confidence of so many Children grow so that they can perform in public with smiles and clear voices. Thank you all of you….. now for KS2 this coming week!'

KS1 Christmas Nativity Performance

Year 1 and 2 were very proud to present their Christmas show called 'Baubles' to the parents at Shirley Warren Primary School. Featuring all of the required parts of a show, the children acted, narrated and sang 7 songs. All the staff at Shirley warren are very proud of what they achieved. Well done KS1.

Black History Month in Year 5!

For Black History Month year 5 have been researching Rosa Parks. We watched some videos and then used the iPads to research her. From the information we gathered we made posters, created our own dramas and even had a news show on Rosa!
