6D go back in time... to World War 2!

This week, Year 6 have been fortunate enough to experience World War 2 evacuation by visiting the Watercress Line. Here, we had the opportunity to take a trip on a real 1930s steam train - just like the evacuees would have done to get to their new homes in the countryside. We also looked at some wartime clothes and packed a suitcase for a rich and a poor child. Finally, we listened to a gentleman who had actually been evacuated back in 1940 - he had some amazing stories for us. What a great day! It will really help us to get into role in order to write our diaries next week.

Historians in the making!

Year 6 have been studying World War 2 this term, and are particularly focusing on using evidence and artifacts from a range of sources. We were lucky enough to be given some wonderful newspapers from WW2 by www.historic-newspapers.co.uk - check out the pictures of us reading them! We love finding out about our past.

Fast forward four years...

 ...and Year 6 have returned home from the countryside where they have been evacuated from the cities to get away from the bombing of the Blitz! I'm sure they have had a lovely time learning to live with their new families; some went to vicarages, some to farms and others to ordinary homes.

We were really lucky to meet a gentleman who was actually evacuated when he was 5 years old during the war. He told us all about his life and what it was like to grow up away from your family in the war. We also got to ride on a steam train through the countryside where some children would have been evacuated.
