Art in Year 1 - Exploring Albert Giacometti's style

Year 1 have been exploring the work of the artist Albert Giacometti. We found out he has created tall and thin sculptures of people.

We tried to replicate his sculptures ourselves using wire. We twisted, pulled, pushed and bent our wire to make the face, body, arms and legs.

Artistic RE in Year 5

In Year 5 this term we are looking at how people describe God.
Lots of people have different ideas and today we used watercolour pencils to illustrate words to describe how Christians see God.

Here are some of our ideas.

Next week we are finding out about how Muslims see God.

Art and Music in Year 6

Year 6 have begun a project looking at the impact of music in film, specifically wildlife documentaries. This will link in to their work in English.

Today we studied the composer Hans Zimmer who writes the music for Planet Earth and Blue Planet. We listened to his piece 'Earth' which he has written for the BBC 10 Pieces project. We then responded to the music through Art, using watercolours.

Making Picture Frames!

In 3C we did some Design and Technology and made our own picture frames. We measured the size of our artwork and used saws to cut the wood to the correct shape. Miss Cooper helped us stick it together using a glue gun. We practised using new skills and had lots of fun! 

Utilita Energy Competition

A new energy hub on Shirley High Street, called Utilita, ran a competition where children at Shirley Warren were invited to design a poster to persuade people to save energy.

JB in 5D was the runner-up and today she and Miss Dickinson went down to the brand-new hub's opening to be awarded with her prize! Well done!

Soccer Aid in Year 4

Today we put on brightly coloured sports tops to raise money and awareness for Socer Aid with Unicef.

If you look sideways at this lovely work by three girls in 4C, you can see what they consider to be "wants," "needs" or not sure.  They also listed some of their own.

Clean Air Day 2019

Today at Green Council we decided to raise awareness by making large letters spelling out "Clean Air Day"

As we know it's very important to celebrate the air we breathe in and out, we had a go at Ink Blowing to create our letters.  We all had a great time trying to make patterns and mix the ink.

4D's Amazing Home Projects!

Wow! Our new topic of Rainforests has started with a bang! It has been an absolute joy to see children bringing in their very own rainforests. The amount of effort and time that has been put into designing and making these beautiful creations is amazing. It has been so lovely to see children so proud of what they have done and being able to share this with the rest of the class. By children being so involved in creating their rainforests, their understanding of what a rainforest encompasses has improved greatly. 

I have been told that there are going to be more joining our display in the not too distant future so I look forward to seeing them too! Happy creating!

Parents, I would just like to say a massive thank you for all your support in enabling your children to create such amazing rainforests and all the help you gave them. 

Religious Education in Year 4

Our key concept in Religion this term has been 'Rituals' and our theme has been prayers. We learned about the Rosary and its importance. We wrote instructions of how to say the Rosary and then made our very own Rosary beads to represent the different parts of the prayer.

Year 4 Chinese Brush Painting

Year 4 Chinese Brush Painting

We have been busying learning how to correctly and accurately create images using the Chinese brush painting method. This method uses brush strokes to produce a painting that is neither improved nor corrected.  Additionally, rather than looking at the subject as we painted, we had to bring the painting forth by using our minds and heart. We have learned that the Chinese artists, who specialise in brush painting, are very passionate about their outcomes. We created a range of paintings including; horses, flowers, frogs and fish.

Y6 Artwork

Year 6 have been studying The Beatles in music. Today we listened to 'Lucy in the sky with Diamonds' and looked at the lyrics.

 We were inspired to create our own artwork, using ideas from John Lennon's psychedelic imagery.

Mothers Day Crafts

This is us being creative and making personalised Mothers Day cards.

A taste of China...'sparkling' into the New Year!

Our topic in Year 4 this term is China! 

Today we tried tasting some different ingredients that you might find in Chinese meals. Some of the foods we liked, but others we weren't so sure on...

To support our topic, in English we will be reading The Firework Maker's Daughter, by Phillip Pullman. So we also had a go at designing some firework pictures. First of all, we used wax crayons to colour our pages in many different colours, before painting over them with black paint. 

  

After the paint had tried, we used cocktail sticks to scratch off some of the black paint and reveal the colours underneath to create our firework pictures.

Y2 Christmas Crafting

We've been very busy making a huge amount of Christmassy bits and bobs. We've had so much fun. Here's a sneak peak of some of the bits we've made before they go home today!

Christmas fun in 1S

The festivities have been in full swing in Class 1S this week. We have been learning about Advent - the countdown to Christmas. We discovered what the five candles on the Advent Wreath represent and had a fun afternoon making our own version. On Tuesday afternoon, we had just started to plan and design our own pop up Christmas cards when news spread that a special visitor had dropped by our school.

 

We decided to stop what we were doing and to go and investigate. Imagine our surprise when we discovered Santa had called in to bring us our own special class present. After Santa had told us all how busy the elves were in the North Pole, as well as a few other interesting tales, we returned to class and the fun continued as we finished  making our pop up Christmas cards.

We're really looking forward to sharing our Y5/6 Christmas production of Jack and the Beanstalk with our friends and family!
