Black History Month in Year 2

As part of our learning about Black History Month we have been researching two famous poets. First we used the internet to research Valerie Bloom, we discovered that she was originally born in Jamaica and moved to the UK in 1979.  We loved listening to and joining in with her performance poetry which introduced us to Jamaican patois. 

We also researched Benjamin Zephania and discovered that although he was born in Birmingham in the UK his work is also influenced by the music and poetry from Jamaica. We also found out that he likes to write songs , plays and act.

Black History Month - Serena Williams

As part of Black History Month, in Year 1 we have been researching the Tennis star:

Serena Williams.

We have been finding out why she is a role model and what she has achieved by working hard.

Many of us want to be amazing at Tennis just like her! Some of us already go to the schools after school Tennis club, so we can practise our skills.

We have shown our findings by drawing pictures of Serena and labelling these with information and her achievements.

Next we will be researching Lewis Hamilton the Formula One race car driver.

Black History Month

In 3C we have been researching different sports champions to celebrate black history month. We researched legends, such as Muhammad Ali, and recent successes, like Dina Asher-Smith. We then presented our findings to the rest of our classmates. As part of black history month we have also had class discussions about why it is important to celebrate people’s achievements and how they have influenced the world we live in.

Black History Month in Year Four

For Black History Month Year 4 have been researching John Blanke who was a trumpeter in the court of King Henry VIII.  They drew pictures using oil pastels of John Blanke and his trumpet. 

Black History Month in Year 5!

For Black History Month year 5 have been researching Rosa Parks. We watched some videos and then used the iPads to research her. From the information we gathered we made posters, created our own dramas and even had a news show on Rosa!

Black History Month in Reception

Reception have been looking at a South African folk tale as part of black history month. It is called Abiyoyo and we have watched and listened to the story and also made puppets so we could retell the story. 

We then learnt about Pharrell Williams who is a singer that has won lots of awards. We danced to his song 'Happy' which made us reflect on what makes us happy. Look at the happy faces we made to use in our dance routine!

Year One are learning about Barack Obama, creating posters about why he is special during Black History Month.
