E-Safety Day in Year 1

In Year 1 we have been reminding ourselves of our e-safety charter, discussing what each point means and the importance of e-safety .

Our motto is lock it, block it, show it, tell it.  

We learnt about 'Smartie the Penguin' and his adventures whilst on his new computer. We helped him, at each stage, to make the right choice:

- tell your adult

- block the message from a stranger

- do not open pop-ups

We also learnt a new song to remind Smartie of how to behave and keep safe on the computer.

Then tell someone.

Art in Year 1 - Exploring Albert Giacometti's style

Year 1 have been exploring the work of the artist Albert Giacometti. We found out he has created tall and thin sculptures of people.

We tried to replicate his sculptures ourselves using wire. We twisted, pulled, pushed and bent our wire to make the face, body, arms and legs.

Year 1 music compositions

In Year 1 this term we have been learning about rhythm and composition through the song "Heads, shoulders, knees and toes."

We made our own silly versions like, "leg, toe-nail, finger, wrist, finger, wrist!"

We made a musical score by sticking pictures of body parts on to card.
Then we used the claves to play and "read" our own compositions to the class.
We found out how to be a good audience and listen to others.
Well done Year 1, what a great start to music this term.

Black History Month - Serena Williams

As part of Black History Month, in Year 1 we have been researching the Tennis star:

Serena Williams.

We have been finding out why she is a role model and what she has achieved by working hard.

Many of us want to be amazing at Tennis just like her! Some of us already go to the schools after school Tennis club, so we can practise our skills.

We have shown our findings by drawing pictures of Serena and labelling these with information and her achievements.

Next we will be researching Lewis Hamilton the Formula One race car driver.

National Space Week in KS1 music lessons

Did you know this week was National Space Week?

We were sent a song to sing which was written for children in Southampton. It had a fabulous chant in the middle with all of the planets named in it.

The children from KS1 learnt the chant and the chorus while Mrs Williams sang the verse. We made up actions and then sang to our teachers in singing assembly.

Mrs Williams was very impressed as she brought in an inflatable "Jupiter" and many children in KS1 knew which planet it was.

Dance Mat Stars in Year 1

We had so much fun yesterday dancing on the huge dance mats!
We used lots of energy and showed off some our amazing dance moves.

Well done to Cohen who was the winner of the dance competition with the most accuracy.

Gardening club have been harvesting!

After school last week the gardening club harvested potatoes which they had planted and this week it was onions. I could smell those onions from a mile away!

They washed and prepared the vegetables so cooking club can use them to make potato rosti's tomorrow, yummy!

Watch this space for pictures of the delicious, fresh food they will be making and eating.

BBC Music day in Year 1

Yesterday it was BBC music day and we had lots of fun celebrating it in Year 1.

We learnt how to warm up our vocals and sung lots and lots throughout the day.

We love singing the alphabet every morning.

We then talked about 'What we liked about Music', from our favourite songs to the noises instruments make.

Year 1 have been amazing readers this week!

Year 1 excitedly had their first dips in the treasure chest this Friday, and grabbed a prize, as a reward for reading 5 times (or more) this week.

All week they have been reading with their adults and receiving DOJO points each time they read.

Well done Year 1, keep up the awesome reading!

Year 1 learn all about: Lock it, Block it, Show it, Tell it

Lock It, Block It, Show It, Tell It is a strategy with an easy to remember slogan to promote online safety to children and their parents.

Lock It

This is about keeping personal information secure: usernames, passwords and personal details.

Block It

This is about blocking rude or nasty messages. It's about blocking bad websites, not downloading anything you're unsure about, and not clicking on any links or pictures you don't know about.

Show It

This is about showing an adult if you come across anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or is inappropriate. This could be a website, a picture, a message or a video.

Tell It

This is about telling an adult if you feel you are being bullied or upset online.

Year 1 have thought up some actions to go alongside this slogan, to help them remember the rules of being safe online.

Year 1 Soccer Aid

On Soccer Aid 2019 Year 1 had lots of fun wearing their sports clothes and using algorithms to instruct their friends from one part of the playground to another.

We discussed and thought about all the children around the world who do not have access to a playground and how everyone has a right to play.

Religious Education in Year 1

Our Religious Education focus this half term is "Change" and looking at how Jesus changed the lives of the people he met. We started by talking about what "change" meant to us and thinking about things that have changed in our own lives. We then explained how this made us feel and decided if they were good changes or bad changes.

Science Week

The 11th-15th March was Science and DT week in Shirley Warren!  The theme of the week was Journeys with each year group having their own stimulus to explore.

Year R - Looked at tunnels: thinking about what makes a good one before constructing their own.

Year 1 - Looked at bridges: thinking about what materials would be best before creating their own that would have to carry the weight of a beebot.

Year 2 - Looked at static electricity and how it could transport the paper animals they made.

Year 3 - Found out about the important role bees play in pollination and then created their own digital animations to show this.

Year 4 - Investigated forces and the effect they had on the fabulous flying machines they created.  They then used iPads to create their own explanation videos.

Year 5 - Found out all about scientists that had visited space.

Year 6 - Had two mini projects of their own; 6L investigated natural disasters whilst 6W looked at the journey of diseases before creating their own viral videos.

The children thoroughly enjoyed practically investigating these areas and learnt lots during the week! Special mention needs to go to the ambassadors from each class that stood up in a special assembly at the end of the week and shared what they had been doing; they were fantastic.

If you want to find out more, why not ask your child what they discovered during this week or try and carry out your own experiment at home!

Traditional Tales - Year 1 Class Assembly

Here are Year 1 ready to show and tell their adults all that they know about Traditional tales.

World Book Day in 1S

We had a wonderful time sharing books with each other. All of the children looked amazing in their costumes.  First, we shared our favourite stories with our parents and teachers. Then we practised our rhyming skills with The Cat in the Hat. Later this afternoon we shared some stories with Year 2. We also heard stories from other countries around the world. We had such a busy day!

The Great Fire of London

This half term Year 1 will be learning all about 'The Great Fire of London'.
This pupil was very proud to share with the class his adventures in London.
He saw the Monument that was built to remember the fire and visited the streets (Pudding Lane and Seething Lane) where the fire took place in 1666.
He was brave and climbed all of the 311 steps to the top of the tower and back down again!
Year 1 can not wait to use their Historical Enquiry skills to find out more about the events that happened in 'The Great Fire of London'.

World Book Day in Year 1

We had a great day dressed up as characters from our favourite books.

We were lucky to have Year 2 join us and read their favourite books to us :)

Safer Internet Day 2019 - 1S

As part of our celebration of Safer Internet Day we decided to try and draw "The Internet." It soon became clear that "The Internet" meant different things to different people. Some of us thought we could use it to watch TV. Others thought we could use it to play games with our friends. A few suggested we could use it to send photographs or emails to people. We all knew it was something that we could use to communicate with each other. We also reminded ourselves of the rules about asking adults for permission and help when going on-line.  We just couldn't work out exactly what it was, so we decided to have a go at building our own.

First of all we made our own device such as a tablet, a phone, a games console, even washing machines and light bulbs. It's amazing what you can turn a paper cup into !

We spoke into our devices but soon realised there was no reply. We were all on our own and couldn't communicate with one another. A few of us decided to join all the devices on our own table together with string ( network cables)  and then we found we could talk to all the other devices on our table.

That was fine until we thought there might be interesting conversations going on at other tables. So, to find out what was going on around the whole room we connected all the devices on all the tables together with our string so that we could all communicate together.

Before long we had built our very own internet and had discovered that the internet is basically a lot of devices joined together by cables so that they can all speak to one another.

This also makes a lot of noise !!!

Next we're off to investigate the "magic" of Wi-Fi !

1S - Learning how to stay safe online

We have been learning alll about what to do to keep ourselves safe when we are online this week.
We decided we should only tell our passwords to an adult we trust and nobody else and Lock-It.
If anything pops up on screen that we are not sure about we should Block-It and Show -It to an adult.
If someone is being unkind to us we will Tell-It to someone we trust so that they can help us stay safe. We learned some actions to help us remember these important rules and then used an ipad application called Morfo to make some crazy faces with messages to remind us.

Un, Deux, Trois.....

We have had fun in 1S this week learning all about France. We know how to count to ten, we discovered different ways of travelling to France and we now know the capital city.
We made our own French flags and also discovered that France has a better football team than England!!!
