E Safety Day in 3H

Today, 3H spent the morning discussing how to stay safe online. We spoke about our online identity and how we all have the right to be happy and safe when using devices and going online. After these discussions, we created story boards to show how we stay safe online. Some of us used Comic Life to create information posters about effective passwords.

Science Week

The 11th-15th March was Science and DT week in Shirley Warren!  The theme of the week was Journeys with each year group having their own stimulus to explore.

Year R - Looked at tunnels: thinking about what makes a good one before constructing their own.

Year 1 - Looked at bridges: thinking about what materials would be best before creating their own that would have to carry the weight of a beebot.

Year 2 - Looked at static electricity and how it could transport the paper animals they made.

Year 3 - Found out about the important role bees play in pollination and then created their own digital animations to show this.

Year 4 - Investigated forces and the effect they had on the fabulous flying machines they created.  They then used iPads to create their own explanation videos.

Year 5 - Found out all about scientists that had visited space.

Year 6 - Had two mini projects of their own; 6L investigated natural disasters whilst 6W looked at the journey of diseases before creating their own viral videos.

The children thoroughly enjoyed practically investigating these areas and learnt lots during the week! Special mention needs to go to the ambassadors from each class that stood up in a special assembly at the end of the week and shared what they had been doing; they were fantastic.

If you want to find out more, why not ask your child what they discovered during this week or try and carry out your own experiment at home!

E Safety in 4C

We followed up Mr Soffe's awesome e-safety assembly by creating our own poster to help others understand why esafety is important. Then the class voted on the most informative poster. The winning poster said, "Before you send a message, let your parent or guardian know what you have written, If you delete your message your parent won't know if you have written something bad or good." By JN The winning girl's poster was this one. "It is important to be safe in the internet because if you get an email from someone you do not know you should always tell an adult. Get an adult to see what it is and then delete it. Never open anything on the internet that you don't know about. If you find anything like messages or emails always lock it, block it, show it and tell it. Always tell an adult about new information. Always never go on inappropriate apps." by LR. Well done class 4C, you have a lot of knowledge of e-safety.

4T Internet Safety Day

Yesterday was Internet Safety Day and in Year 4T we were focusing on how to show kindness when online.

Then we thought about the qualities that make a good friend and how someone can show those qualities when they are online.
We encouraged each other by sharing with everyone in the class different qualities that make each of us great friends. Then we thought about how we can show those qualities when we are online.

- A good friend online is someone who doesn't pass on any pictures or videos that you don't like and always asks their permission first. 

- A good friend online always says kind and encouraging things.

-A good friend online includes friends in their games, rather than leaving someone out. 

Year 6's Coding Conundrums!

Today, Year 6 got to grips with brand new coding software called Crumble. It is made up of the computer program as well as physical parts which all have to be wired correctly in order for our algorithms to work. It was quite fiddly and technical but everyone persevered and managed to at least program their sparkles to light up!

Some even managed to complete a traffic light sequence including multiple sparkles. Great effort!

Year 4 going Quiztastic! - Keeping safe online

This Week in Year 4 we have been reminding ourselves of how we can stay safe online. 
We created a quiz for you to see if you know to stay safe online.

Tellagamis in Year 3S

In year 3S, we have been using Tellagamis to encourage people to keep their passwords safe. We decided that children needed to not show anyone their password and make sure that they covered their password as they put it in .

Year 5 Space Music

Year 5 have been using Garageband to compose weird and wonderful music inspired by a Journey through Space. They used clusters and arrays to create an atmospheric sound and added samples. Check out their compositions at https://soundcloud.com/swpnsmusic

Programming in Y4H!

In Y4H we have been beeeeeezy (pardon the pun) programming Beebots! First we talked about what an algorithm is. We said it is a set of instructions that need to be clear and specific. We then had a go at using our English skills to create a short interesting story that would take our Beebot on a journey around our map and visit some of the icons/pictures. Then we programmed the bots to follow their journey. When they went off in a different direction we had to debug our code to amend the incorrect commands. Check us out having a go in the pictures!

BeeBot Adventures in Year 3

As part of our computing learning, we learnt to program BeeBots to move around a board with pictures of different Stone Age locations. Miss Smith gave us some directions to program into our BeeBots, but she had made a few mistakes. We found the mistake or bug in the directions and reprogrammed the BeeBot so they made it to their location. 

ESafety in year 3S

We had a great time completing different activities for ESafety day. We worked well with our groups to create comic life comics to show how we might feel about different situations! We had a lot of fun showing our faces in reaction to the situations, some of the faces were very funny! 

E-Safety Day in Reception

Today for E-Safety Day RS and RG got together to listen to the story of Smartie the Penguin. Smartie learns how to use the internet safely and what to do if he feels sad or worried about anything. We then learnt 'Lock it, Block it, Show it, Tell it'. We learnt that passwords keep our things safe and we shouldn't tell anyone our names or where we live. We learnt to not click on links that we don't know and block things we don't like. Our main learning was to make sure if we feel unsure, worried or sad about anything we either show or tell a grown up we trust. Watch our video to see!

E-safety Day in Y4H!

Today is e-safety day; to help us promote how to be safe online, especially with online images, we created animations to show and spread the message. We used an app called 'I Can Animate.' We had to be careful not to move the camera when we were taking the pictures so that the video clip at the end was not jumpy! Here is an example of one of our animations:

Y3S exploring algorithms!

Year 3 have been exploring different algorithms for games. We get given the algorithm and have to work out what game we will be playing by reading the instructions. Here are some pictures of us using an algorithm. Next we will be working out the bugs in the algorithm and how we could debug it and make it work correctly.

World Water Day 2016

Today Shirley Warren Primary School helped to celebrate the 23rd United Nations World Water Day.

We started off with a very interesting assembly from Ashleigh from Southern Water who challenged us to think about where we could save water.

We then heard from Stella Typhoon (Mrs Bullas) and Aqua Lakes (Mrs Williams) who were hosting Shirley Warren News, about water around the world.  But they kept getting crackly screens! There were no reports!  So every year group found out about an aspect of water during the day. Here are some games from Year 3.

From Environmental Health correspondents to Weather Reports via songs and lots of practical activities, Shirley Warren News was finally aired at the end of the day.

Then we saw some photos of our link school, Tukela, in Zambia.  They need to raise money for flushing toilets.  Maybe you can just about see "boys" on the left and "girls" on the right on the corrugated doors in the picture. Can you see any water nearby?

As we have just had Sports Relief we are going to fund raise next term but we need your ideas for interesting ways we can raise money.  Please tell your Green Council rep any ideas you have.

Year 6 Dragon's Den

Last week, Year 6 performed a fake Dragon's Den.  All of the companies got invested because their creations were really good.  This is an example of one of the company powerpoints - the SSS.  SSS was short for Secret Silver Services.  The creator of the ring of vision is JB himself, The script creator was DM, The powerpoint creator was KAT and I am the one writing the blog!

Before the day, we prepared everything ready for the Dragons.  The ring of vision was made out of bronze and silver/cardboard and coloured pen!  We took pictures of the ring of vision for the powerpoint.

Safer Internet Day

I dropped in to see Year 4 who were making e-safety posters and writing 'pledges' - some terrific ideas and work. Then had a chance to attend the e-safety assembly demonstrating the work everyone has done across the school on this important part of life!

Shirley Warren's Online Pledges!

As a school, we have been celebrating 'Safer Internet Day' and as part of that, every child has made an online pledge. Here is a photo of every child with their pledge. The children are taking responsibility for their safety, and know it is their right to be safe whilst enjoying all the advantages that the internet offers them.

Today we have been learning about how to stay safe on the Internet.

We wrote our own lyrics to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" including the chorus
